Rear-Wheel Drive Type R???
I am not sure how to make a poll, but here's the question for all those 97+ type r owners.
What would you do if the type r was available, with absolutely everything the same about it, except, it sent power to the rear wheels??
If there were two versions, one FF and one FR, Which would you have bought?
This topic was sparked by a discussion between a friend of mine who owns an E30 M3 and myself(00TypeR). Both of our cars were at the time NA and were dead even in a sprint, had similar braking and were equally rare. Of course mine doesn;t go through $500 in parts a month, but that's another story. Basically it lead to the...what if the type r had been RWD????

I would consider getting a ITR and would respect them more if they were RWD.. but since they aren't.. I'll just keep buying and boosting RWD cars.
I know I'm spoiling the spirit of the thread, but the ITR could not be RWD and have the same capacious rear cargo area, which, being a gigging guitarist, is something I must have.
So I would still chose FF.

i like my R the way it is... although the fwd was the only thing, i wasn't sure about, when i got the car.. if it were b4 i got my R and i had a choice i would've got the rwd.
And Honda would've been less interested in the homologation and racing programmes because the sales mightn't be there in the promotion of its other lines of cars, which would be radically different in design from your FR ITR.

I completely agree with George.....
I think if it was FR it would be much more expensive = not affordable for most people. But if Honda could keep the price the same, than it would be very very NICEEEEE!!!!!

if you want a rwd ITR then get an AE86...its Toyota's closest car the ITR except RWD...
There is an AWD Integra, but its a weak 1.5L

Although from an engineering stand point a FR ITR would be near impossible, I think what is in the back of everybody's mind is that Honda should make an inexpensive RWD sport compact. No one else makes such a car and if Honda made it, we all know it would be a hit.
Unfortunately there is no room in the under $25K range for that car because it would definitely cannabalize sales of the Civic Si and RSX. However a sports sedan a la 3 series BMW or IS300 would fit in quite nicely for around $30K. With RWD Acura could make an "R" version and it would fit the bill quite nicely, although it would admittedly be more expensive that the ITR/RSXR. Either way this would be an awesome car (maybe a return of the Prelude). Rumor has it that a sub TL sized RWD sedan is indeed in the works but with Honda's insane corporate security we won't know until a few months before its release.
I hear a lot of BMW guys compare the E30 M3 to the ITR. They are very similar in philosophy but BMW guys always insult the ITR because its FF. But remember if the ITR and E30 M3 were made at the same point in time the ITR would be at least $10K cheaper. Then the E30 M3 doesn't seem so superior anymore. Nonetheless I do respect the E30 since it was the most successful touring car of all time.

I have to disagree JMU R1, FR is not that much more expensive. Of course there would be some disadvantages, mainly the space limitations, but that 10K difference includes the BMW flagship name premium. A lot of manufacturers had inexpensive FR coupes, I'm sure Honda could design one as well. They are not interested though because FF cars are more appealing to general public.
FF configuration is fairly big disadvantage for performance cars and a lot of people pass ITRs solely based on this factor. I will not keep it as well, because I want something pure.

About AWD... I drive High performance AWD car for a long time. The traction is incredible, but I?m not sure if I wanted AWD for a sports car. A lot of fun can be had from balancing the car with the throttle, and AWD seem to take away this pleasure. I would opt it for weight savings (and price!) any time for a sports car.
BMW is going to bring out the 1-series soon. The fastest will be a compact M1 Coupe with 250 hp RWD!!!! I think it will costs about the same as an S2000....

What I meant was it would've been cost prohibitive to try to make the DC2R RWD. The engine bay is not set up for it, the chassis is not set up for it and no other car in the Honda lineup could donate parts. RWD in and of itself is not tremendously more expensive than FWD but making a FF specific car like the Integra RWD is.
