Default D15B2 Bad Low RPM Power

I know the D15B2 with the DPFI intake has almost no low end power but I think there may be something out of tune on my engine that causes it to be worse.

When I accelerate I get poor power up until a certain rpm then it is like a kick in the pants and I take off like mad. I don't have v-tec head. When I accelerate the engine still runs very smooth. I just adjusted valve clearance and my compression is 170psi (not poor but not optimal either). I feel it could be vaccum line related. It feels like when I step on it WOT the intake may be losing all vaccum and something emmissions is shutting or something. Maybe that vaccum actuated plate above the throttle plate? Maybe this is just the normal behavior of the engines we have in our cars, i don't know. It just seems odd that the power kicks in like someone has just hit the nitrous button. If anybody has a suggestion for me to try please pitch in.

BTW this is my GOOD gas mileage car. I'm trying to get this car tuned to perfection so that I get the best gas mileage possible. It has 24 years of maintenance catching up to do. I usually get about 38mpg

Correction, "takes off at full power", It is like when I get to a certain RPM it just goes and instantly blips up the power like a switch was flipped. I just want to understand it and maybe get to the bottom of it.

All Honda's do that to a certain extent. It's called "torqueless engines."

It shouldn't be that drastic though...

Do you have any CEL's?

I know that we don't have much torque at all but it does really strike me as odd that it has a very drastic change in power output while accellerating. It really has me stumped.

its called hitting the higher lobes on the cam. you hit your powerband where your engine makes the most power.

your valves are burnt up. im 99% positive.

ive had 2 different b2 motors that have had bad/burt up valves. the car had NO ***** under around 3500 and then felt faster than it should above then. get a new head

huh? the power band is just where the engine is the most efficient. It doesn't "hit" a differen't part of the cam

No one thinks to check the distributor? When I got my STD with the D15B1, it was horrible when trying to get moving, turns out when the guy had the distributor replaced due to ignitor failure it was put on with the timing retarded all the way. A quick advance of the distributor and it was like night and day of the difference, it would actually move now(move as in get going not as in fast...). Same thing happened with my brother's D16Y8.

So yea check and make sure your distributor isn't retarded all the way.

I think he means the cams are in their rpm range that gives the most effective power band. Best lift/duration for power at that rpm.

If my valves were burnt wouldn't I have no compression? During my compression test I put a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder to help seal up the rings after only getting 165psi on each cylinder. The oil brought the reading up to 185psi. Does it mean anything or can you still have compression and have bad valves. Gonna do a head gasket change soon. We will find out.

Doing a leak down test will tell you if you have burnt/severly worn valves, or bad/worn valve seats.

I am having the same issue with my d15b2 as well. I did a compression test and the readings were all scraggly but within 10% of each other. A lot of people tell me it is either burnt valve or ignition timing. let me know how things go! Ive been scratching my head trying to find out. My car seems to run better in the low RPMs when it is cold. Do you notice a difference?

Only v-tec has a higher cam lobe. the d15b2 is a non vtec. but with this issue we are having it kinda feels like it. lol

This thread is 7 years old. My b2 sucked ***** because it was stock and automatic. You want to feel more power look into dpfi-mpfi, cam regrind, and SI tranny.
