Installing an aftermarket CD player in an EK DX
I tried to search this out, but everything seemed to general to be of much help. I recently purchaced an EK DX hatchback and I want to put my new Alipine deck in it but am having some slight issues and have a few questions. First of all, what is the easiest way to go about removing the factory radio? Once out, what will I need to install the deck and make it look right? The reason I ask is because the way the dash is shaped on the drivers side, it is angled slightly and so is the factory radio to match, but my alpine obviously isnt.
Just looking for some help before I tear into it tomorrow,
thanks
-Marc
Oh, are the factory rado's worth anything?

Aparently you have a 96-98.
First, to match the curve, you're going to have to get a trim kit. Also, for the best plug/play alternative (and easiest wiring), buy a harness adapter. You can find both of these by selecting your vehicle on http://www.crutchfield.com
Also, another option is installing the new deck where the pocket behind your cupholders are, and keeping your stock deck in it's stock location. This will deter theft if you take your faceplate off and leave your cupholder lid up, making it look like you have just a stock radio.
To get your stock radio out, you are going to need to take off your knee bolster pannel, your 12v accessory pannel, and your glovebox. Then you get up under there with a philips head screwdriver and unscrew the two screws on a bracket way back in the dash. It's not picknick, I'll tell you that.
Also, no, your stock radio isn't worth much. I'm selling a spare for $15.

you need a plastic install kit to fit that odd shaped hole

I really do reccomend keeping your stock deck up top. It will deter walk-by breakin's from meth-heads just looking for a quick score. Also, when your deck is down below, it's bolted in as well, instead of just sliding it into a metal cage that it can be pulled out of in about 5 seconds.
Here's my setup with working stock deck and stock CD slave. Used to have an Eclipse deck, but I wanted something a little cleaner.

Wow I need one of those. I got my deck where my tape deck was, but I dont like trying to change songs, ect. while a beverage is occupying my cup holder. Such a pain in the ***. I do like to leave my cup holder up to prevent theft but my sparco pro2k kinda f'ed that up.
the EL console looks nice, but what do you get over the stock console? The stock console already has a second radio spot and a security flap to go with it? Also did any stock 96-98 head unit come with a cd player?
I don't get anything but a better looking console.
And no, no 96-98 civic radio came with an integrated cd player (at least stateside). The 1.6 EL had a radio identical to the 99-00 si cd player, except it said ACURA instead of HONDA at the top. The lower din was reserved for a pocket or a cassete slave.
