Default LSD install

I recently had my jdm type r lsd put into my 98 gsr. My car already had ball bearings on the open diff. So i just replaced them with new ones, but my mechanic never changed the shim. The tranny already had the 1.0 shim and he told me that i didnt have to change it. So far everything works fine. Anyways, should my tranny be ok?

Did the mechanic check the clearance with a feeler gauge? It is possible that the 1mm shim was the correct shim for the new differential.

That is not good. I check my differential clearance and then handed the feeler gauges to my buddy for an independent verification.

There is also a torque spec you can go by. With the trans assembled and in neutral, turn the diff with a needle style torque wrench. You will need a special tool to turn the diff, i made one out of a socket and a piece of steel rod. It should take "x" ammount of torque to turn the diff, the range is somewhere around 20 ft. lbs i think. It's been soo long since i did mine. Obviously if it rotates too easily you need a wider shim and vise versa. Good luck.

He has ball bearings, not tapered roller bearings. You use a feeler gauge for the ball bearings. The only rotational torque spec for the ITR LSD check the operation of the LSD.
