I've got a 97 Accord v6. Ever since I bought it last year, it has a bad vibration whenever I brake. I've gotten my rims straightened, new front rotors, new tires, and checked the tie rods. Everything is fine but it still vibrates really bad when I brake at high speeds. I've checked and done everything that I can think of that would be causing this problem.

Does anybody else have any ideas of what could be causing my car to be doing this? It's got about 110k on it if that matters.

The swaybar endlinks being bad wouldn't cause something like this would it?

 

r u sure that the rotors r good? cause it sure sounds like warped rotors.mine r doing the same thing right know. it only does it when going fast and hit the brakes hard.

 

yeh that is what happend to my girls eclispe the rotors were shot i would check that out.

 

I just had new rotors and pads put on the front about 6 months ago. They're Brembo rotors and I don't drive aggressive at all, more like a 75 year old man. But my car did this before I had the rotors replaced and it still did it right after the rotors were replaced. So I'm pretty sure that's not what the problem is.

Not yet. I'm going to after this paycheck because I just had 4 new tires put on.

 

OK, one thing you can check is your calipers. unbolt them, and take off the pads. then bolt them back into place w/o the pads. see if they slide back and fourth freely with your hand. If they dont, then you need to lube the mounting points. The brake caliper is supposed to slide freely during braking to absorbe some of the vibration. I had this problem on my civic and it took about 6 months to find. Check this out and let us know what you find.

Alright, I'll do that sometime this week. Thank you for your input.

 

Is the vibration in the steering wheel or in the seat? If there's something wrong with the front end you'll feel the vibration in the steering wheel. If you feel the problem in the seat and not the steering wheel something is wrong in the rear, and it's most likely the brakes.

I see that you have had your front rotors done.
Any rear brake work?

Try this get up to speed and use your parking brake handle gently and see if the vibration is there as the brakes are applied. If indeed you should check out your rear brakes.

I haven't had any rear brake work done but I have looked at them and the rotors and pads look fine. But I couldn't tell if they're warped.

The vibration isn't really anywhere specific. It's kind of all over the place. Like if I brake on the highway, the whole ******* car shakes.

 

Here's a simple diag procedure I've come up with for brakes.. Vibration while braking... First, heat up the rotors.. Next hit the brake pedal, where's the vibration??.. Does the steering wheel shake?? Do you feel it in the pedal, can you hear the vibration? Next, pull the E-Brake while driving at 60+mph.. Is there a vibration noise??

You said that you've replaced the rotors with brembos.. First question.. Have you tried resurfacing the rotors on the car like Honda recommends?? First things first, if there's a vibration in your steering wheel, start by resurfacing your front rotors on the car first. Then recheck for a vibration from the rear..

Lastly, don't overthink the problem..

 

Well I've been talking to my friend who works on nothing but Hondas and has been for pretty much his whole life and he's saying that this is like the first time that he's experienced a vibration this extreme. He said that he's had one guy come in and it ended up being his hubs were out of shape, which in turn was causing the rotors to become out of shape. He said he used to have a machine that he could turn the rotors while they were on the car, which in turn would straighten up the hubs, but he doesn't have it anymore. So I don't know. The vibration doesn't only show up in one area. It affects the steering wheel, pedal, seats, car. To sum it up, the whole ******* car shakes, lol. I don't know any other way to explain it. Sorry guys.

I'm going to try to do some more research and see if I can't figure this out. The car has been in an accident in the front as far as I know. I know the front bumper has been repainted because it's not the same color as the rest of the car, and when I bought it, the grill in the bumper was painted the same color as the rest of the bumper, but on factory bumpers, the grill is left black. I just don't know how bad the accident was and what it affected because it didn't show up in the carfax report.

 

Does the car have a salvage title? When you look in the engine bay, do you see any unusual welds that would indicate previous damage from the accident?

No salvaged title, and I haven't looked that closely in the engine bay to find any unusual welds.

 

Well, the point being that if the accident were bad enough, they car may never be true again, meaning you will have problems like this for as long as you own the car. But this is just one of many possibilities.
