Default readiness monitor BS!!!

ive been driving around, waiting for them to turn on, but kept coming up with a CEL for my IAT sensor.. so i changed it, and there are no other codes.. is it safe to assume that the readiness monitors will now turn on since there is nothing else wrong?

asking because ive heard that if there is a CEL, or something, that may prevent them from becoming ready..

its a 97 DX by the way

If my shop runs into any OBD2 check engine code we fix the problem, clear the code, and then tell the customer to drive the car for two drive cycles (bascially make two decent trips with the car parked and cooling off completely between trips) before the car will pass the readiness tests at an emissions station.

OK, so here is the low down. Monitors are set by specific drive cycles. Some require two drive cycles.
To classify a drive cycle the car has to cool off between them. The coolant temp needs to drop to the air temp and the air temp sensor tells the ECU this.
To pass you only need six out of the eight or nine.
There is a manufacture drive cycle list for setting these monitors.
To give you an idea here you go.
Drive car at 45mph to 55mph for 10 minutes then drop to 25 for 5 minutes.

I have only had one car that would not pass the monitors after driving it for 100 miles. Good Luck
