But I am almost at my wits end right now.

Some back history....its a 93 Civic Hatch.

It was stolen in January so I have only driven the car maybe 10 times this year, but I remember this squeal happening before that.

I installed rear disc brakes from an Integra last year plus new brakes and discs up front.

The squeal is very mysterious. It comes and goes as it pleases...I think I have narrowed it down to coming from the back passenger side of the car.

It definately seems to be related to the momentum of the wheels and/or brakes spinning, because the squeal isnt there when just sitting idle.

It is not constantly there either when driving. It might be like squeak........squeak.....squeak....squeeeeeeeeeaaa aaaAAAAAk! Stop. Then nothing for a few minutes. The intensity varies...sometimes barely noticeable and sometimes loud as hell...as in you could hear it if I drove by you going 70 on the freeway.

When coming to a stop, and I let off the acceleration, it seems to get louder and more consistent but it definately slows down along with the momentum of the wheels spinning....then comes to a stop.

I cant find any other consistencies about it...like only when I turn, or only when accelerating fast, or whatever....its really random.

I can't reproduce it by jacking up the car and spinning the wheels either.

And its been happening for a really long time....

This is by far the stupidest post I have ever made...I understand if I get flamed....but its starting to drive me crazy....and I'm supposed to drive to Vegas today...and I think I might go mentally insane trying to pick apart this squeal every time I hear it.

Last night, I took apart the passenger side rear brake and cleaned it..made sure it had clearance and everything. But today driving..the squeal is still there.

If anyone has had anything like this happen before...please holler back.

I know this is a retarded post, so if you don't have anything constructive to say, please just dont say it....

Was the noise there before you changed over to the rear disc set up? Check and make sure that you don't have seized caliper slide pins. When you converted to rear disc did you overhall the rear brakes ( new pads,disc,and relube everything). What type of pad/ rotors did you use?

Yea...the bad part is I cannot remember if it was happening before...I am thinking no which is why I think its probably related to the brakes...but last night, like I said, I re-did the rear passenger side brakes....made sure everything looked good...re-lubed it....

And yea..I overhauled it all when I first changed em out....new rotors, pads, re-lubed...cant remember brand names at the moment.

Did you get blank rotors or ones that were xdrilled or slotted. I know when I switch over to xdrilled rotors there was more noise from them under braking.

They are blank. I drove the car to Vegas this weekend...5 hours each way and the noise was minimal after cleaning that rear passenger side brake up. It did happen some but not nearly as much as I was expecting.

So...I'm certain its brake related now and I just need to spend the time cleaning up the other brakes...re-lubing them and stuff.

Hopefully that will clear it all up completely.

so did you check to see if the pins are stuck? it was already asked but you didn't really say if you checked them or not. also see if the pads move freely in the caliper, they can get stuck and rub on the rotor sometimes. i worked on a few cars with the symptoms you described and it was one of those two problems.

Brake squeals are typically caused by high frequency pad vibration. When you installed the pads, did you use anti-squeal compound behind the backing plates? What pads did you install? OEM Honda?

also, ontop of what targa said, did you check rotor runout??? i have seen it too many times, enough runout in the rotor to kick the pads in and out, but not enough to notice a pulsation when braking. i know you said they where new rotors, but that means nothing with aftermarket parts.

When I first installed everything, I had taken all the pins out and lubed everything up....but I think I need to make a pass at all the brakes again just for good measure.

Yea, i used anti-squeal....cant remember what brand pads, but they are not OEM.....everything for the rear was bought for an integra since all the parts were from an Integra.

This is a good thought....because I noticed, when i jacked up the rear with no ebrake on or anything, a swooshing sound when I spun the rear tire....but not a constant swoosh...only in certain parts....

so...good point...rotors could be slightly warped...just enough....but i will spend the time to clean up and lube all the parts again, since it did seem to help the one rear brake so far.
