i dont understand what the point of having drive-by-wire... from what I've read and experienced it causes more random problems and pisses drivers off more than anything else, with that response lag and all, so why do we have that instead of a good old throttle cable... is there any advantage to the DBW system over regular throttle?

The DBW does improve fuel economy, like Demonis mentioned. When cruising, the ECU keeps the throttle wide open in order to decrease pumping losses. This technology is one of the reasons why the Non-Si R18 engine gets such high MPG.

Under low-load conditions on conventional engine, the throttle valve is normally partly closed to control the intake volume of the fuel-air mixture. During this time, pumping losses are incurred due to intake resistance, and this is one factor that leads to reduced engine efficiency. With the i-VTEC engine, however, intake valve closure timing is delayed to control the intake volume of the air-fuel mixture, allowing the throttle valve to remain wide open even under low-load conditions for a major reduction in pumping losses of up to 16%. Combined with comprehensive friction-reducing measures, this results in a significant increase in fuel efficiency for the engine itself.

Drive by wire only causes lag when the writers of the software allow it to. It isn't an inherent issue with DBW.

Engineers like DBW because it allows the computer to control throttle angle for many different situations, one example was already mentioned.

DBW also allows engineers to get rid of the idle air bypass valve because the computer will keep the throttle cracked open slightly when necessary. That saves money. In the auto industry $$ rules.

Yea, I checked out the new si, and Im still interested in making the switch from em1 to fg1...but My friend who is a honda mechanic told me since there a lag in the rpms when you shift...b/c of the dbw...there will be less replacing tranmissions when you mis-shift at high rpms...could be a defense mechansim for the safety drivetrain itself...

From reading past bulletins, the reflash is for Civic SI only, in a certian VIN range? So DX-EX shouldn't need one. I've noticed Rev Hang in my EX, but that could just be my shifting?

i enjoy the lag, compared to driving a '99 Prelude to 07 Si the lag helps with shifting and rev matching

I never heard about a reflash or anything. This sometimes happens to me when going from 1st to 2nd.

also the DBW systems actuates with the VSA (vehicule stability assist) so it controls the throttle in turns so you won't oversteer or understeer.
