Default d16 turbo

I have a 99 Honda Civic DX D16y7 and I wanna turbo it. So I am asking what upgrades I have to get for the motor before its ready for a turbo kit.

Or if I dont turbo would a new intake manifold, headers..etc make a big difference?

the manifold is a must for a turbo kit, the y7 manifold doesn't work for most turbo aplications (if any), and is a poor design anyways.

and no, a header won't do much if anything for a y7.

Other than the manifold, there is nothing you need to do to the motor to boost it. There are things you can do, such as upgrade the clutch, brakes, suspension, fuel pump, ecu, etc.

If you buy a bolt-on turbo kit, there's not much you absolutely must do other than swap the intake manifold.

not very practical though, and you have to get custom piping.

custom piping?

how about a 90 degree silicon elbow or pipe?

run the piping from the intercooler through the airbox opening(behind headlight where CAI would go) straight pipe to throttle body and elbow. Easy.

but it you would upgrade intake maifolds, go aftermarket from the get go. skunk2, edlebrock....

That's still custom, because your modifying to to meed an individual specification, not a blanket application ... regardless of the cost or ease.

custom
adj : made according to the specifications of an individual

And easy or not, a Y7 manifold is still less effective than a Y8 manifold.

turbo d's also like to lift heads. it might be a good idea to invest in some arp head studs if you plan on boosting as well.

i wouldnt call adding a coupler custom, but if it sounds good to you rock it.

The minimum you need is a good set of injectors. The best price to performance would be had with obd1 conversion (using crome, hondata, etc), a y8 intake manifold and injectors. Based on a 'normal' turbo for that motor, 8-10psi will be safe, as the rods tend to bend once you get into the low-mid 200's for wheel HP. A y8 head isn't needed, since you can 'max' out the stock internals just by upping the boost. With the y7 manifold, I'd do 10psi and leave that last 11psi tuning column just incase it overboosts (10:1 richness and heavy timing retard).

All you'd need with a bolt-on kit made for a y8/z6 motor on a d16y7 would be that 90* elbow. But for ~$100, the y8 manifold is a HUGE step over the y7 manifold.

The best thing you can do to the motor mechanically - make sure it runs PERFECT before boost. SO many slap a kit on, then try fixing problems they had previous that now are severly amplified by boost.
