Bad Idle on 88 Civic ((Pics of Ghetto Rig Inside)) 3 Questions
Hello all, just bought a winter beater (88 Civic LX D15B2 w/auto tranny)and it has a problem. Very low/bad idle when the engine is cold (start-up in the morning). The engine idles so low when cold that it will stall, so I combat this by holding the motor at 1200 rpm until it builds up heat then it will idle better. Goes away when its uo to operating temp, except for at the occasional stop light when the motor will idle down very low and the whole car will start to shake(until I put the car in neutral) then it will stop. As you can see in the pic, there is plastic pop label that he put on there to "seal" it up. This was rigged up by the previous owner to "fix" some sort of problem.
Questions:
1) Why would he do this?
2) Is this the source of my bad idle?
3) What is it called, and do you have one that I can buy?

hmm , I see the coolant line blocked off with a bolt as well.
That is your IACV (idle air control valve) , looks like the guy tried to bypass it.
Ive got one , if you still need one let me know.

all the coolant lines do for the IACV is keep it from freezing up.
that picture is by far the most confusing thing ive seen.
that flat part with the holes is suposed to be bolted to the manifold.

The flat part will all the holes is supposed to have a cover, and it is bolted to the manifold. The picture is confusing but it`s a dual point manifold, get a dual point EACV and it should solve all your problems, well probably no all but should clear up the idle problem.
You may not need a new EACV. Try hooking up the coolant lines again, let it run and see if you get any CELs. Then take it off and try cleaning it out really well with carb cleaner. Let it dry, re-install, then see if it makes a difference.
did you remove the front plate where the coolant lines go? If you didn't and it was like that, that will be your problem. Put plate back on and attach lines. If you do not have plate i have two eacv, you can have one just email me with your offer.

Good luck

remove the pop label' it looks as if it's block air from going through, causing the low idle(during cold starts that valve opens and lets air bypass the throttle plate).
And YES, a A6 IACV will work on a D15B2 manifold. I know this because I stuck a D15B2 DPFI one on a D16A6 manifold. The only thing is the the coolant nipples are pointed in funky direction, but shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. the ecu controls the opening of the valve at all times so your car idles at the proper rpm. if it is not working properly car will have a hard time having a consistent idle.
I've had this exact same problem in the past and you need another IACV cause he prolly tried to bypass it since it was shot. The purpose of the IACV is to let more air into manifold when engine is cold causing your idle to go higher and once it warms up it goes back to normal idle. Change your IACV and hook up lines properly and it will work fine.

Sent out your EACV Saturday. Should have by tuesday or Wednesday.
Good luck with install. The Oring i sent you is pretty new, you might not need hondabond on it. Thanks for payment

thanks for the parts, and I already have my fair share of working on honda's. And I owe a lot of my knowledge to honda-tech.
