2006 SI: Check Engine Light
Need some advice or help...
I bought an 06 Si USED with 6500 miles...from a Honda Dealership...it had an aftermarket exhaust...the check engine light keeps coming on...they have tried 3 different cats...the code is 420...now they tell me the only way to fix it is to put the original exhaust back on and they want to charge me a ton of money for it.
A different mechanic told me that since it's only code 420, that I only need to change the back O2 sensor.
What should I do?

Since it is a 06 with 6500 miles I assume it was sold as a certified used car from the dealer? If the dealer did certify it then they will replace the parts to correct the CEL. If that doesn't help a call to Honda of North America customer relations line will get the ball rolling.

Yup yup..what he said. I would think that there may be a race header on there, but the OP said the cat was replaced, so that takes the race header out. Maybe there WAS a race header on there and the original owner Fd up the O2 sensor.

i have to disagree with the last poster as far as the reflash but the other guy made huge sense since the car was sold at a crtifed then they are REQUIRE by LAW to have the car correctly .... or go to american honda as stated

Well...here's the thing...when I was looking at the car...I noticed that it wasn't Certified...the salesman told me that it was NOT certified because everything was covered by Manufacturer's Warranty...so I figure I have nothing to worry about....he did not tell me anything about the aftermarket exhaust system that was on there. I drive it off the lot and a few days later Check Engine Light comes on. They tell me it's the Catalytic Converter...they have changed it out 3 times...now they want to put the original one on and charge me for it.

I wouldnt think its a certifiable car considering the exhaust modification? As I'm sure you know honda is super strict about certifying cars with ANY sort of aftermarket equipment, even an alarm system.
Either way I'd look into getting the car back to stock trim to prevent any sort of problems, just my 2 cents.

No it wouldn't be able to be certified but in the end it's the dealers discression on what they certify as long as it's within year and miles. But if it's a item Honda does not cover, it's out of thier pocket.

If the code your talking about id P0420 That is catalytic converter efficiency below threshold.
Meaning your car has a converter that will not work with the car (after market converter is too small and that is very common with non Honda converters)
You need to install the Honda converter at Honda's expense

I can get you the converter for your car but it's still going to be expensive. You need to contact the general manager of the dealership and demand it gets replaced. If not go higher into American Honda. This is not your fault and you shouldn't pay for it

What does a certification have to do with the engine or the code that popped up. Its only purpose is to ensure the car is safe to operate on the streets.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by TRE_ »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

lol funny ****. If you have an aftermarket muffler your car is unsafe..
Go to another dealer ang get them to check the code. If they will not cover under your warrenty then call head office and give them an ear full. If its your o2 they will cover it under your warrenty.

different meaning here for "certification". In this case Honda sells CERTIFIED used cars, meaning they did some BS inspection and deem it to be in good working order. It's a gimmick they use to sell a used car for more money. Kinda like GM's Optimum used vehicle program.
not sure about the USA, but in Canada if we have ANY problem (except collisions) w/ a used car within 30days of buying it the dealer is 100% responsible for repairs and there is $0 deductible. But IMO they sold it to you w/ the exhaust and it's their resonsibility.
