Timing Belt Broke At Idle - Ok or Not
Just like the title said. The idle was set to around 600-700 rpm it was completely warmed up. It began to run pretty bad then the belt sounded like it fell off while i was adjusting my cai.
I know its hit or miss with engine damage with timing belts and Hinda's but at 600 rpm and the engine turning off immediately...do you think there is terrible damage? Thanks.

it should be fine if its an h22. the h22 is only an interference motor while in vtec.
It should not hit if you are at idle and the belt breaks.

It should be fine on a stock engine. Re-time it with a new belt and do a compression/leakdown test to double check.
btw, this should not generally happen. There may be something else wrong besides just the belt...

Thanks...yeah I'm changing the water pump and whatnot. It's kind of annyoing...hopefully it doesnt take me that long to replace the belt. Setting the timing seems to be a bitch though...
Question because I dont think I truly understand about the crankshaft TDC. I want to set the crankshaft TDC to the No-1 Cylinder. How exactly do I do this...I have the Prelude book and a Chilton's book. Just wanna double check.

That's if it doesn't spit out an apex seal first! During VTEC, of course.

That is not correct.

UPDATE!!!!!
The guy who did my motor made a terrible mistake. I dont know what it is called but I will post a pic up and show you exactly what happened. I didnt have my digital camera at home so I couldnt take a pic of this bizarre event.

Wish I had a bigger picture. This is not my engine.
The part circled in Red...the balancer belt tensioner I'm guessing...well the spring that holds the end part up came off and went into my timing belt and got caught up in the crank pulley effectively stopping the engine.
the part circled in green...that bolt on that tensioner was loose. And almost coming off. The mechanic JUST went in two days ago and replaced the rear balance shaft pulley and you have to take that tensioner off to do so.
Point being he did not tighten up the bolt to that tensioner causing it to move about freely...makingthe sping jump off...catching in my timing belt...and stopping the motor.
I am highly pissed but also happy that this happened WHILE in idle in my driveway...instead of on my way back to college. I will take pics if I can...the sping is still lodged in the crank pully and the belt is shredded there. Funny thing is the motor is still in time I believe and the two belts werent broken.
The mechanic is not getting paid until this problem is resolved. I want the belts replaced...and I want the engine to run correctly.

I had an auto tensioner fail on the highway (not vtec) and my H22 was fine. While doing a damage assessment, I turned the intake cam to peak lift and I could turn the engine over (no timing belt) and the pistons cleared the valves. Same on the exhaust cam. Now if both intake and exhaust were open to peak lift the valves might hit each other, but I don't remember if I checked that. To sum up: my H22 in not interferance (valve to piston) while not in vtec.

You must have one of those limited edition JDM H22z1s that are non-interference! Werd!
