Default Looking what chula vista is doing

CHULA VISTA – San Diego city officials announced yesterday that they would crush cars they find fitted with stolen engines or transmissions in an effort to break what they say is a continuing cycle of auto theft.

if you walk in with paperwork to show you purchase a JDM engine from a reputable seller and the serials matched i'm sure they'd let you go.

but yes, extra hassle but well worth it

why are they concentrating on the cars instead of the people they catch WITH the cars? give the car back to them, run surveilance, find more perps, etc.

Seems to me like the city could have used this as an oportunity to make a little extra cash. If they have the power to crush the car, then why wouldn't they have the power to just keep the car and strip it and sell it at auctions?
Doesn't seem like they are punishing the theives by crushing the car. A theif will just go off and steal another car, or what if your the poor bastard that bought the parts and didn't know they were stolen.
Hope it works though.

Wonder if they'll try to return the stolen parts to the rightful owners (assuming the VIN or other ID are still attached)?? Hate to see ITR engines destroyed because they were stolen.

Can the police locate the original owner by block or tranny serial numbers?

and who's to say what they think is stolen really isnt...for example brand new engines and transmissions from the dealer...they do not have VINs on it; so if you dont have the receipt with you, bye bye car?

especially if you purchased the parts 2nd hand and they are legit...

government officials won't appreciate an ITR engine

they just see a stolen engine. thats it. something that makes a car go along. they dont give a toss if it gets destroyed.

however. if the people who BUY the stolen parts stop buying them because they are losing their cars to being crushed. the thieves will stop. supply and demand. things only get stolen if they have buyers for them.

its unlikely to be completely effective, but if it stops some more innocent people having their cars stolen and stripped, i guess it all helps

as stated above.. i think they are focusing more on the theif not being able to sell the stolen parts anymore.. i dont realy agree with the reasoning for crushing a car but i guess its a start??...

some days i am envious to you people out in cali, it seems when rare parts get imported in it seems to stay there before someone like me in ohio can get their hands on it.. but on the other hand i like the fact that i can park my car outside and not be overly stressed about something happening to it..

now i used to work at a toyota dealer up until this past june and one thing i noticed on all new trans or short blocks is that none had vins tags on them, when i first noticed i asked parts if i had to transfer the old tag to the new unit and was told no... now how the hell does cop know this? i do cuz i worked at a dealer how do they track stolen parts with out a vin tag???? can you imagine you have a new car and had tran/motor changed and they crush it??? i know the dealer should have the paper work for you but im sure some thing could slip through the cracks

i thought there wasnt anyway to prove if a motor & tranny was stolen or not

there isnt any vin # database
so how would they go about proving your motor or tranny was stolen

so do you have to prove your stuff isnt stolen or do they have to prove that it is?

what happens to us who bought motors off fellow members....

Stolen is stolen if some1 reports the serial # If either the insurance co. or you or by the DMW records.

If you bought a JDM motor from a shop then they should put the serial # on the receipt to prove where the motor came from, but then again if the shop bought a stolen motor then you got 90days to prove something. Also if you sold a motor from your car you should give some paper work saying you sold the motor from your car. Should your car be stolen with your new motor and you did not report this to Cali. bar then the serial# to your original motor will be on the stolen list. When i bought a new B18C5 block from Acura of Escondido and my crx got stolen in NJ i went back and gave my block serial # to the police to make sure the block is on the stolen list (Of course the cops in Jersey don't care cause i called back about a yr later to see what the news and they have no idea about me claiming a stolen engine. So some 1 in the east coast who stoled my crx has a Legit B18C5 block. A$$hole)

I forgot I did call the CHP to check if a motor was stolen or not, and if i remebered they wanted to see it in person to check to see if it stolen or not. There was no way i'm going to buy a a motor, take it to the CHP office and then have then take it away cause it's stolen (if it was. the person selling it said he gota from some1 else. again no paper work to prove anything)

I think thieves will care less about this new law.

They buy a crap of a shell for less than $1000 bucks, They steal the motor and rims and other crap from other honda's for FREE and they install it themselves for FREE... and if they get rolled.... Well they lost $1000 bucks that they paid for the shell.
Go to jail for a week come back out.... rinse and Repeat.

Cops need to throw these guys in the slammer for 5 years at least.
