Default FORCED induction

Please give some advice....I have a 98' d16y non vtech. It has an cold air intake, headers, exhaust, pulleys, cam gear, chip, etc. I have accumilated these parts over a period of about one year. I have not spent that much yet....I want to keep this SOHC---what should I do...At first, I thought I should swap the engine. But I then realized that I really should use my low mileage SOHC. I know I can run about 5 psi of boost and be alright internally, but is that the right solution? I would like to build up my internals 1st, but do I reaaly need to for low boost? If so; pistons, rods, rings, valvues, etc...i need someone's help who's been here before...

You don't need to upgrade all your internals for only 5psi of boost. You don't need to start doing that until 9 or 10psi. In fact, I know of 3 or 4 guys now that run 14psi on just upgraded rods and pistons(no sleeving or block guard) and run Hondata with larger injectors.

I would suggest that you get a y8 head.

RoaringTurtle has a nice SOHC turbo setup. You should axe him about it.

hahaha, axe me lol
maxim pretty much has it down
i wouldnt upgrade internals til about 12 psi and even then i would only upgrade the pistons and rods
this is all assuming you have a decent fuel management setup
not a crappy fmu

you should be ok with a low boost situation but once you start boosting higher you will break stuff, the rods in these motors are not strong, i know this caues i have one too, and i have just built a full race version because i want to boost alot, SOHCs are great, if you lose a race you say "hey i got an SOHC" if you win a race you say "Hey i got an SOHC!"

it goes both ways its kind of fun

Actually the rod bolts on both the D16s and the B18bs are extremely small compared to the B18Cs, which is why you hear of these engines punching rods, etc..

How much boost are you running? and how long have you been(that's if you don't mind me asking). Basciallly, I want to know if I will be wasting my money on a t kit by running low boost, or should I focus on my internals prior so I can start with a higher boost. Is it true that non vtechs have lower compresion than vtechs?

i will say, it is more fun to drive a boosted car then a high horsepower n/a one.

i have not boosted in the motor yet still in breakin,

the motor is good for 12-16

but thats a fully built ported polished, bored to 1.8l, 9.5-1 compression endyne pistons, pauter rods, you dont need to boost incredibly high to make power(some poeple dont understad that)

but its still open deck, because we are going to use it for course racing and need extra cooling, soo we will most likly run 9-12

but we will know its safe

well you wouldnt be wasting your money on a turbo kit technically, because you can just turn up the boost later, or if you swap you can just get another manifold and go from there, so no in my eyes a turbo kits is a good investment, you can use it for a few cars down the line if your smart with it...

as far as compression ratios yes the d16y7 which is the DX non-vtec 96-98

is 9.0-1 compression stock

the d16y8 from an EX 96-98

is 9.5-1 i beleive

they are not far off but the non-vtec versions arent made for the power so they dont have high compression, which makes it good for turbo kits with no other mods.

Besides, ported & pollished, stronger pistons, rods, cam, vaulves, retainers, springs- what else needs to be built up if I plan to run a similar to yours...I not copying, I'm being inspired...

Here is a simple solution for you. If you don't plan on running more than 10-12psi of boost, get your turbo and just get GE rods, JE pistons, larger injectors and get Hondata. That is all you need. Forget about sleeving or a block guard. You may want to think about a J&S Electronic Safeguard though.

ok well this is what i did

ported, polished head, swirl tip vavles, endyne rollerwave pistons, pauter rods, thermal coated entire engine. internals everything

and most of what you listed is good, the only problem is that fac tthat since this motor is not very popular with tuners because the want the vtec, stuff like vavle springs and cams are harder to come by......so i had custom vavle springs made and a custom cam made, soo it is alittle more interesting searching for parts, but its nice because you know your gona be one of the few that does this to this type of engine....

and im not worried about you copying me, im not saying im doing it perfect but im trying to do it right, so if you want to do it right and you want to do it like me then im flattered...

the main thing about doing a turbo charged honda, or anything that has been turbocharged after the fact and not from the factory is fuel management....you have to commit some time and money to make sure your tuned corectly,

im gona be running the AEM ems system, Hondata is equal in my eyes so either one would be good.....but those systems are a bit of money so this isnt going to be a small project,

just to put it into perspective i spent roughly $10,000 on this motor with turbo and everything..(turbo alone((just the turbo)) was about $2000 of it)

but you can do it similar and not go for the crazy turbo and run say a greddy or a t3to4 and be good....and not have to spend an arm and a leg.

and i know all the bseries guys are gona chew my *** up about spending so much on a single cam but this is all i have to say, you see b series all over now, i want to do something different, but dont get me wrong about 6 months into the motor build i got b series fever and i questioned my choice very hard, but im gona stick with it......

but in case this motor does last, or when im done with it i am definatly am puting a b series in

also in my signature you see the lin kfor the build up, there are picture and a list of what i have done, there may be some stuff missing but its most of it....

I thought the d16 sleeves were a weak point in the system when boost reaches 12psi? Can they handle more than that? Also, I've heard the valves don't like very high heat either and should be replaced for higher boost?

yeah well being open deck is not a plus.....but right now there isnt much i can do,

but 12 psi should be fine....as long as its tunned.....if it was untunned i would sya no

i have had a few people run 14 on t3t04 on basically stock d16's and run for some time like that, but eventually the give up.....

the valves have been replaces to swril tip stainless vavles.....and the entire engine has been thermal coated inside and out so it disipates heat better

PornStar...Is this the same car that was parked on MM St for a while? I thought that was a silver 99ex? What happened to that car? I see the Mercedes is the latest project after the Audi. Cool.

MM street....not sure if i remember a street with that name

the silver ex was a 97, i built that for the marketing director here....he then sold it and got the audi, which i then built alittle too, then he gave up on that and got the mercades menz....

what was really fun is i would race him in my dx each time he got a new car, and beat him, heheh

my car is the silver DX, carbon fibre hood, white volks

not that same car as in the wingswest ads

so your in SB?
