hey guys 1st post, sad to say its not a happy one
92 civic dx hb 5spd
ok so i was driving home from work (highway) and this jerk cuts me off and i have to slam on my brakes and swirve slightly so i dont hit him...this startles me and i accidentally shift down into 2nd going about 55-60
now i pull into my driveway and its idling all nasty and it blows smoke out the tailpipe smelling like antifreeze
so i figure i have a blown head gasket, at least....would anything else be possibly damaged?
thanx

thanx for the reply padawan
i'm guessing thats something i would need to take the engine apart to know for sure? would it be an obvious bend or something slight, when looking at them
also does anyone know of any walkthroughs for replacing a head gasket...or can give me tips and/or an idea of other parts or things i'll need to do the work myself?
thanx again

55 to 60 mph is about 6000 rpms? Give or a take a few hundred rpms. Do you know what color the smoke is? Is it black, blue, or white?

Bent valves could be white smoke. Did this to my b20 when I was angry over rev'd it.
Check to see if theres any leaks. & have you turned on the car since? How's it running?

you sure you were going 55-65 mph cause when i had a single cam i use to throw it in second around 65 all the time! unless you road on it for a while!? but sounds like bent valves to me!

so would a compression test showing NO leak mean its definitly the valves...and a test showing there IS a leak mean that the head gasket is definitly blown and possibly the valves are bent also?

update:
today i started it up cold...noticed that it has lost coolant but none is to be found on the ground and i dont know if its possible but i sniffed the oil filler opening and the dip stick smelling/looking for antifreeze and couldnt make out any...the antifreeze doesnt look to have any oil in it either...
idles fairly well...added some coolant let it warm up, fan finally kicked on once...then i put the cap back on and rev'd it a couple times
doing this caused a lot of white smoke to come out the exhaust and i noticed that after it was warm and the tstat opened to let the coolant in was when the idle started to drop and cough and the exhaust started smelling more like burnt antifreeze
i would like to know if theres a difference between a leak-down test and a compression test?

I have (only once or twice) gone from above 60 to second, usually when I am pissed off as well, but I didn't have any problems from it, however I only have 82,000 miles on the car, maybe your head gasket was already weak and if so would have went at one point or another anyway probably.
there is a difference between compression and leak down test. do the compression test first then if you have an odd cylinder w/ low comp try the leak down to narrow your search for an answer
the oil looks normal on the dipstick other than being kinda low (change due in 500 miles)
car doesnt even have 70k miles on it
and it did have a overheating problem when i bought it, bad radiator/fan switch/ or tstat...anyways i fixed that problem but it did get pretty hot a couple of times so that might have weakened the gasket?
as far as the 2 test what will one tell me over the other?
and i came across some "quick fix" stuff the other day while surfing...thermogasket i think it was...normally i wouldnt even consider a quick fix product but what their website made sense to me....has anyone ever used the stuff or heard about someone using it?

id say its the head gasket.. i do 2nd gear 60 mph pulls all the time ( its more like 6500 rpm for me) and never had a problem with bent valves or blown headgaskets..but im also still stock woth about 150,000 miles. i wouldnt even bother with that head gasket fix stuff since it will only be a cheap bandaid...and ultimately ull have to change it anyways...mights as well do it correct the first time.
but before u do anything at least do a compression test to see if it is ur headgasket for sure. if u bent a valve ud be leaking oil into the combustion chamber so u wouldnt be burning coolant... correct me if im wrong

found it...thermagasket is what its called

obviously it wouldnt fix a bent valve...im going to try and get the equipment to do a leak down test this weekend...and also a compression test
wish i had a freakin tach so i'd know what i really hit when i downshifted like that...never mentioned it above but its a 1.5L which im sure most of you knew already when i said its a DX

meh...i wouldn't put that thermagasket **** in there...i never have liked **** like that. it's a temporary fix anyway.
what part of dayton are you in? i might be up that way this weekend, so if you're somewhere close i could swing by and take a look at it.
