HELP!! I cant advance my timing more than 12 degrees btdc!
Ok so I had a friend put in a dohc zc in my 88 rex. It's been running like crap and Iv'e been trying to fix it for a few days. My friend put a new timing belt and water pump before he put the engine in. He said that the he had to shave the middle timing belt cover to put on the alternator belt. And in doing so shaved off the alignment marks for timing. I don't know why he had to do this but whatever. he showed me how he aligned the cam timing, he did it by putting a long screwdriver down the #1 piston to find tdc and then aligned the cams. I have checked this and the cam marks are pointing to eachother when the #1 piston reaches its highest point and the dizzy is pointing to #1 cyl. but the crank mark for tdc is a little off from where the marks were. So I made my own mark with a knife on the cover for tdc. When I try to do the timing (btw I have a standard timing light with no advance features) the timing wont advance farther then 12 degrees btdc in relation to this new mark. WHAT THE &*&%#!!! Do I need a new dizzy or what?
no, you're belt is just off a tooth. you can time it by pulling the crank pulley off, and the little gear the timing belt is on has a timing mark the lines up with a mark on the oil pump and do it that way, not kake ur own marks
what little gear the timing belt is on? and would i have to remove the engine mount and jack up the car to do this?
youd need to jack it up, remove the drivers tires, and remove the crank pulley. behind the crabk pulley, there is a small timing gear that will have a line on it and the oil pump should have a pointer arrow to line it up to., then, ur block is at tdc, then u adjust the cams by re setting the timing
