Default question about driving style??? answer this!!

a friend and i had a serious debates about whats better for your car....

to stop in second or to shift down to first everytime u stop your car. He shifts all teh way down everytime. I know thats not good for u're tranny, i usually stop in second, the shift down to first, on teh startup when neccessary..

what do you guys do???

if i know im comming to a stop i just put it in neutral and hit the brakes. (only if i know i have to stop, cause 4th to neutral to 2nd is hell on it)
it might hurt the tranny but thats my habbits.

It's easier to replace brake pads than synchros & piston rings.

There's no need to go all the way down to first. I don't know about your cars, but on my 98 GSR I tried it before and it was one hell of a time trying to get it in first when you're rolling to a stop. Didn't feel too good so I didn't do it. Neutral to brake or 2nd to brake works for me.

Neutral and brakes. Also on my car it is damn hard to get it in first if you're going faster than a few mph.

I put the clutch in and hit the brakes. As I start to slow down I downshift with the clutch in and I don't shift to first until I'm completely stopped.

You'd want to downshift only when there's snow .... trust me

when im slowing..its downshifting all the way down to 2nd when possible...otherwise its to 3rd and in with the clutch to a stop..from the stop..ill usually just work the gears from 3rd to 2nd and into 1st befor starting up again..it didnt seem that compliated when i did it..

i'm going at 60 mph in 5th gear.
i see the light turn yellow than red.
i press the clutch put it in neutral, and start pressing the brakes.

like said ealier easier to replace brake pads than to put wear and tear on the synchros.

Sometimes I downshift, but it kills gasmileage with a mugen chipped ecu. So lately I have been coasting.

If you rev-match when downshifting, it shouldn't matter if he goes down to first or second...

i double-clutch down to second, then brake. been doing it for almost 3 years and the tranny is good as new - and so are the brake pads!

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned what I do: leave it in whatever gear and get off the gas pedal. Press the clutch when the engine is under 700 RPM.

Exactly what I do. You save gas that way too, because the injectors are turned off when you are not on the throttle and above 1100 RPM. But when you just put it in neutral and brake, then engine is having to use gas to keep the engine idling.

This is the recommended thing to do. A good rule of thumb is to try and be IN GEAR any time the car is rolling. But think about what you're saying in the previous statement. So if you're not on the throttle and engine speed is above 1100 RPM, the engine needs no gas whatsoever to keep running? Ask yourself what the basic elements to make internal combustion happen and you'll realize that the injectors have to be running.

I used to shift nuetral and brake, but went through brake pads pretty quick, stopping from 60 to 0. Steering wheel shakes too when I have to stop from that high at first. Car feels like it likes me to shift to 3rd at about 50 and then just coast and brake if I need too.

This is a quote taken from the PGMFI Training Modules that were posted on here a while ago from http://www.tech2tech.net

Coasting fuel shutoff
If the ECM receives a closed throttle input (under.5V), the engine speed is above 1100 RPM, and the engine is warmed, the fuel injectors will be shut off.
