96spec has higher compression.

11:1 vs. 10.6:1

If it's a complete swap you also get the nifty sub 200km/h ecu limited top speed...easily defeatable with OBD1 swap etc.

I'd go with the one that has lower mileage.

ya it'll be the complete swap? So it's just compression? I herd it's also final drive ?? But ne ways you think just the one with lower mileage?

98+ itr b18c's do have the 4.7fd. they also have the oh so famous tubular 4-1 header. 00-01 b18c's also have a slightly bigger intake cam (ctr specs)

Hrmmm...now that I look at his post again...

I took it upon myself to misinterpret the message. If the OP is lookin' specifically at JDM motors.

96spec and 98spec, then you should get the latter setup.

B18C5 = USDM which = 10.6:1CR as pointed in previous post.

if you can spend the little amount more. Get the 98+spec as said above.

To put all these together,

you get the 4-1 header
4.7 final drive & LSD
11:1 compression ratio

US ITRs got the CTR intake cam, JDM motors didnt, they have the same cams as the 96spec and pre 00 US ITR motors.

i think the newest motor possible should be chosen because its more likely to have less miles

Your wrong there.
The 98spec JDM B18CR got the CTR exhaust cam. Its what gives it a slight bump in torque over the 96spec.

i only heard of 2 differences:
(1) the header is different
(2) the final drive...yes! if ur going for the long drive, then the 96 is a better choice because it will drive at a lower rpm than the 98 spec.

the 98 spec does have an advantage with the final drive but it all depends if u want to take advantage of having a 96 spec when driving long distance. see, i drive 30-40 miles to school so i chose the 96 spec.

mileage really doesn't matter IF you're planning to upgrade your engine internals, such as, cams and stuff.

hope this helps.

Well, once you start building the motor from top to bottom and racing it, all you can say is that IT WAS A B18C unitl

no. the bump in torque came from the 4-1 header. the cams are exactly the same from 96-00. trust me, i've had a 96, 98, 99, and 00 B18C all in front of me at the same time, and the cams are exactly the same.

So many opinions but not much actual knowledge of the JDM motors.....
Get the 98spec if the K's are lower and the price is right.
It has what people here refer to as the CTR intake cam - 3 degrees more duration than the intake cam in the 96spec.
The final drive is different but so is 4th and 5th so it's not going to matter much on long trips:
96- 3.230 / 2.105 / 1.458 / 1.107 / 0.848 / FD 4.40
98- 3.230 / 2.105 / 1.458 / 1.034 / 0.787 / FD 4.785
98spec has the better stainless 4-1 tube headers.
