what is a better tranny for racing? and which is better 4 freeway driving?

b16a2 or b18c1?

 

b16 tranny has shorter gears, thus provides better accel. The b18c tranny has slightly wider gears, and is slightly more tollerable on the freeway. I've got an B18B1, and plan on getting a GSR tranny as a compromise between the my wide-open LS tranny, and the 4500 @ 65 on the freeway b16 tranny.

80mph @ 4950rpm

avg 28mpg 80-95mph avg speed.
5000-6000rpm.

80mph @ 3400rpm
3400-4000rpm, 80-95mph

avg 28mpg

same exact drive, columbia to spartanburg and back.

 

GSR 1-2, b16 3-4, LS 5th.

5th for the interstate, since I doubt he will be racing in 5th. The only real difference is 2nd gear he can go 69 instead of 62 (assuming shifting at 8250rpm), so he will be able to accelerate at the same rate longer. 7 mph more in 2nd, and it really wont slow him when accelerating since the gear is not much longer.

 

You could always just do a straight B16 tranny, with an a/m LSD and an LS 5th gear. Your motor should have enough low-end (unless you've got a b16) to just grandma-shift up to 5th gear and still get good gas mileage.
