Default Honda Transmission Fluid

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey LX. I was told you are to only use Honda ATF transmission fluid. Is there any transmission fluid that is equal to the Honda ATF that will not mess up my transmission? The reason I ask, is that the auto place I went to put in the wrong fluid and now my transmission slips. Of course they want to blame it on me saying the problem was already there. Any help, advice, website to research would be greatly appreciated.

There is no equal to Honda ATF. The closest is Dexron III. This information can be found in your owner's manual. It also states that continued use of a different brand of ATF can affect shift quality, and should be replaced as soon as possible.

If a shop filled up your transmission with an incorrect ATF, they may be liable for damages. I'm not sure if you're aware, but there's also a warranty extension on 99-01 Odyssey transmissions from Honda. It's good for 7 years or 100,000 miles.
