when your ecu cant detect a vital sensor it will throw a check engine light, retarding the timing and dumping excess fuel...this is known as "limp mode"...to make it go away, find out what code its throwing and fix it

as long as your CEL is on your car will be in limp mode...
if your talking about when the car wont go over 3500 thats because your either throwing multiple codes or just one code for a very important sensor...fix the codes and itll fix your problem

edit* being an ******* gets you nowhere in life

if you dont' know how to figure out the code, pull out the passenger front floor mat, and pull back the floor carpet fromt he front top of where the passenger's feet would go, just pull it back enough to see the light on the front of the computer, count the blinks, make sure you count a few times, to get the correct number, and be sure that you don't have more than one code, write them down if you do.

What causes your car to go into limp mode?
Anytime the ECU senses any sensor or switch that is either disconnected, broken, or not working properly (out of spec) will set your check engine light (CEL)to go on.
When the CEL goes on the ECU tries to save the engine and it's parts by going into "limp mode"
Limp mode is a preset safety mode by the manufacture to try and save you and your car from costly repairs.

Hope this helps

i'll break it down A B C style for you

What Causes Limp Mode
A. A check engine Light

What causes a Check Engine Light
B. a bad sensor, bad wiring...

How do I fix it?
C. Find out what is broken to cause the Check Engine Light

How do I do that
D. pull back the carpet on your passenger side footwell and read the code.

How do I determine what code it is?
E. Count the long and short blinks.

What codes will cuase "limp" mode?
F. I would say all of them.

Limp mode is when your ecu wont let you rev over 3500 and severly retards timing. All codes do NOT put your ecu into limp mode. When my ecu went into limp mode it was due to a bad chip.

also if it is in limp mode on obd0 cars the light on the ecu will be solidly lit. On obd1 cars it will be constantly lit when you jump the wires to check your codes.
