Default Ut Oh!

Well last night I was just completing my oil change. No big deal. As I was tightening the oil fill cap, I guess I over tightened and the top part broke away from the threads, so I took the valvecover off so I could retrieve the threaded part still in the threads of the valvecover. I called up a friend who had an extra one so I went and picked it up. Well I gave my valvetrain a thorough inspection and I didn't see any plastic. So I put the VC on and cap and had my girl friend start the car and the engine sounded fine but you could hear a loud noise coming from the valve train area. IDK WTF is up, going to check it soon.... I'm pretty nervous. Although the more I think of it, the engine sounded fine it was just like a noise. IDK it's hard to explain. How bad could this be

Like the engine sounded fine, running smooth, I could just hear what I am assuming the plastic getting ate up by the valve train. It can't be a big piece at all though.

But there was a noticeable sound difference before and after the cap breaking? Are the caps the same material?

Hey its me on my gf screen name.

Yeah the caps are identical. I'm assuming a piece of plastic broke when I over tightened my original one.

I wouldn't see how dropping plastic in there would cause a consistant noise. I would double check the valve lash. I've seen the nuts on the adjusters come loose and fall into the head or oil pan, and when the adjusters back out, that DOES make a lot of extra noise.

BTW... you must have one hell of a grip / forearm to break an oil cap!!!

Haha I guess IDK. I'm not that strong. But that would be weird that all of a sudden my valve lash is outta whack. I guess I just need to push it back into the shop and take the valve cover off and inspect it. Should I start it and let it run some more. It only ran 5 seconds max until I told her to shut it off. I just don't know if this could cause extreme damage.

Also, I don't want the plastic to go down into an oil return and block the passage.

Go with your gut feeling... If there may be something wrong, then I would take the time to double check, at worst you're out a little time and hondabond. If you only ran it for 5 sec and it didn't sound right... you're right, valve lash isn't going to change that quickly.

i guess i will

since you only let the engine run for only 5 seconds, are you sure that you even got oil pressure in that time. i don't mean anything is wrong, but after you change the oil and start it, the oil has to work its way through the bearing, through the empty oil filter and up to the head. idk what engine you had but mabey it was just a slight noise from the lack of oil pressure in that short amount of time, just a thought

That is a definite possibility. I just took the VC off again and didn't see anything wrong. So I put the VC back on and crossed my fingers and started it up. All sounded fine. IDK.... getting ready to take it on a test drive.

HOWEVER....

I have noticed my fan is not working (previous owner hard wired it to always be on, i know i know, im working on things lol) so could I have possibly heard the fan motor giving out when my gf started the car? Hrmmm... possibilities. Guess Ill go take it on a test drive... good thing it's freezing ***** here.

Allright guys...... here's the verdict

Some wiring loom got into my fan which was the 'unknown' noise during the initial running period. Got all that taken care of and it runs like a champ now. The fan motor didn't get burnt up it just quit working because I guess it sensed a heavy load so it automatically shut off. I got the loom out of the way and started it up and about 15 seconds later then fan kicked on so all is well. Thanks for the help guys.

BTW, I seafoamed it before this and feels real good now. I recommend seafoam to all.

Thanks.

you have 7000 plus posts and you are making a thread about a bit of plastic that may have ended up in your valves?

Dropping stuff into your engine is risky business, nothing wrong with askin about it...
