I have a valve spring compressor. I thought they were designed to be used without the retainer. How am i supposed to grab the keepers with the compressor on it

I have them blocked off. ANd no, im not going to just let them drop. how stupid would that be. I already have compressed air available and spark plug adapter. i just need an answer....
WILL THE SPRING come flying off as soon as i hit the retainer with a mallet?

your an idiot period. yes i hope they do fly off and hit you directly in your eye and make you lose all possible vision. geez. go buy a valve spring compressor from autozone. now think about it.. how will you put back on your retainers and springs without the proper tools. go read a book or something.

to answer your question....you can hit it with a mallet and nothing will happen....the valve will just open a little bit and close immediately.
To loosen hit the retainer, then use the removal tool....after you replace the valve spring, and retainer tap on the end of the valve stem to ensure that the keepers are seated properly.
