Default Ignition switch problem

I have a 95 Accord that wont stay started. As soon as you let off the starter it dies, but operates fine as long as the switch is in the "starting" position. Accessory position does not work either (no fans, power window function, etc). So it seems the ignition switch is bad. Looks like a pain to put in a new one (shear-head bolts?!). Has anyone done this? Is there an easier fix?

nope,,,,,,,,you got to replace only the electrical part of the ignition switch,, unfortunatelly you got to remove the whole switch out of the car,, it is not that hard at all,
remove the steering wheel covers, get a punch and hammer and remove the sheared bolts,, you got to do it a bit at a time but they come off real easy,

no need to center punch those bolts just take the connector of the new ignition switch (you'll end up with 2 pieces) plastic piece on one hand and connector with copper end on the other then from there it'll seem obvious of what you need to do just be gentle when you pull the new one apart. kind of a pain i n the *** to SPRAINED MY FLIPPIN WRIST doin that ****, but it's easier the drilling holes

good luck

there's a site that show u what to do

I have never delt with shear bolts. Arent they threaded? So wouldnt you have to unscrew them by drilling them out or cutting a slot for a srewdriver.

no need to drill or cut a slit......just use a sharp punch and hammer, and use the punch to back off the bolts............yes they are threaded in so you have to unscrew them..
when you put it back together , either you reuse same bolts or install 2 differnt bolts but it is hard to find shear off head, they come with the complete ignit switch assembly and not just the electrical part ,,
just use regular bolts if you have to ..

would replacing just the electrical part work for my situation?
Here is what happened: i was driving home and all of a sudden my tach and speedo became jumpy and were going down to 0, my lights were going out and finally the car died. I had a mechanic friend look at it and when he was starting the car he noticed that if he held the key there it would work and as soon as he let it go it would cut off. So the key wasnt staying put. Do i need to order the ignition switch body and have it rekeyed or will just the electrical part work?
TIA
