Default d16y5 head swap questions

I plan on buying a y5 head and swapping it onto my y8 block. I know I will need the HX ecu, 5 wire o2 sensor, and EGR, but other than that what will I need to complete the head swap? I tried searching but this is all I could find. Which parts will I be able to keep and reuse, for example manifolds, distributor etc.?

??? Is there something wrong with my post? I want to do this for economy, not performance.

I know it sounds crazy, but at this point in my life mpg > 1/4 time. There are people that have achieved 40+ mpg with this engine, and if I can get as high as 39 on a bone stock EX, I can only imagine what I can achieve with vtec-e

the head swap may not get you there

swap out the tranny for the cx/dx models.

switch to 13 inch steelies. maintain high tire pressure.

get rid of unnecessary weight

Well its a very good start. I think I will benefit from it as I havent gone over 2800 rpms in weeks. I know taller gearing will help a lot in highway travel, but all of my driving is city and I only reach 50 mph at the most. I heard the first, fourth and fifth gears in EX trannies are the same as the other D series; is this true?

I have raised tire pressure to 40 psi and Im looking for a set of HX rims that arent overpriced. About the unnecessary weight, Im not going to strip any of the interior. I have plenty of time to plan for this, as I wont do anything serious until spring since its already cold as hell here, and I simply do not have the time now.

think in the long run .... is all the money you are spending on mods to get better mpg , will get you waht and extra 5- maybe 10 mpg .... thats an extra like 4 dollars off everytime you fill the tank, which could be waht like once a week? so in a year youd save only 200 bucks, swapping the tranny, head, rims, etc costs money

Thats true. But I plan on keeping the car quite a bit longer than a year. And I would be almost breaking even after I sell my y8 head, EX trans, etc. Its not like Im just pooling together a bunch of money with no return. And I foresee gas prices going back up to $3+ a gallon in the near future, and I know Im not alone thinking that. And also, right now I have more financial freedom to pursue such endeavors; pretty soon I wont and getting 5-10 more mpg will be beneficial.

I made a pretty good profit on my Y5 head swap. I've achieved 44mpg freeway with a 93 hatch, Z6 motor, 15x7 rims, EX tranny. You might want to set a higher goal.

40psi tire pressure is too high and it's unsafe. It wont give you better mileage. Run somewhere around 36 cold psi at the highest. Less if you're using OEM rims/tire profile.

Keep your dizzy. Any manifolds are fine but you need the Y5 mani for the EGR if you want to use the HX ECU. The Y8/Z6/Y5 head gaskets are all the same. Any 92+ VTEC valve cover will work.

Another thing I would like to mention is the fact that a Y5 with an EX tranny is faster than a Y8 with an EX tranny. You do this right, and it's a performance upgrade as well.

Of course to see some real gains from this head both from a performance and an economical standpoint, you need some real engine management like an AEM EMS.

Thanks for giving me your respected opinion. But I have already thought these things through and taken into account the market values and expenditures compared to savings over time etc.
