POR-15 Review
Just a little kudos from a satisfied user... I never really introduced myself to this forum, but I am in the process of restoring a 98 ITR theft recovery. The car has 129k miles on it, with the past 3 years being between daily driving through salted snow in NY and sitting. That and a shitty paintjob make lots of fun rust for me to worry about.
I treated my rear bumper for rust recently. I've tried different things on different parts of the car from that clear crap you buy at advanced to just buffing and painting. This stuff I bought, POR-15 blows it all away. They say you should just paint it on the rust and it will neutralize the rust and prime it. Here's some before pics (after quickly buffing off the surface rust):

Here are some pics right after the sloppy first coat I applied with a brush. It actually dried looking the exact same way:

After it dried, the surface felt like a thick plastic coat. Very nice.... Hopefully it'll stay that way.

Ive used it, my dad has used it on his mustang over 6 years ago and still no rust.
Did you use that other product first (cant remember what its called), then put on the black ****? I just used the black ****.

I personally have not had much luck.
The POR-15 is supposed to come with as a 3 step process.
You're supposed to have gotten, marine clean, then apply metal ready and then finally the POR-15 itself.
I chose the silver because it is supposed to be impregnated with metal and was recommended for highly pitted (or whatever the term was) "mega rusted yO" surfaces.
I would check into rustbullet.com or others have had luck with this.

I applied the POR-15 two years ago to a moderately rusted rear arches on my '93 Civic and YES it DID work to some degree, slowing the spread of the cancer, but I'm having the arches replaced in upcoming months because it could not STOP the spread.

That's interesting about the multistep process. I do remember the directions saying to use metal-ready to prep on smooth surfaces, but there was definitely plenty of rust for it to cling to. Thanks for the eastwood link-I'll have to spend my christmas money there :-P
Thanks for the luck on the restoration, and hopefully I will remember to take pics of the bumper again next winter and let ya'll know how it's coming.

another thing to note is that I also used it on the edges of my sunroof plug.
I had a Suzuki Aerio hood cut into the shape of the plug and then had it sealed and riveted to the roof.
The tool used to trim the hood scored all the paint off the edge of the shaped piece and it oxidized and developed surface rust.
The rust was removed with a dremel and sandpaper and then appropriately prepped (3 stages) and a 2nd coat was applied (I have been told aftewards that this is not the best way and a wirewheel is best while sandpaper/emery embeds fine rust particles into the metal - So maybe that's why it's FOoked).
It's gone through 2 winters and the car is parked outside, but the climate is relatively mild in Vancouver BC, and the rust is starting to show through the POR-15.

Oh yea, I was gonna add... They have a caution on the container about avoiding contact with your skin. They're right, next time I'm wearing long sleeves AND gloves. My chemistry professor flipped out the other day he thought I got some chemical on my skin during lab.

i am planning to repair both rear quarters on my civic with rust repair panels this winter or spring and I have been looking into products like this to spray the wheel wells and inner fenders with. Does this work well on rust free surfaces to prevent rust, or is it meant to only neutralize rust that is already present?
it works good as a preventive measure. I'm sure it would have done a lot better if my rust issue wasn't as bad as it is/was.
I still think the POR-15 3-step process is silly. I'm in no way affiliated with rustbullet, but I'd really consider looking into that as they have done some pretty extensive testing against the most popular brands on the market today including POR-15

Yea, I've been looking at that rust bullet ****. Looks pretty sweet. I think I'll buy some, put it on my Jeep and do a cross-comparison.
I'll get some more pics of the car up tomorrow....
