Default 1997 Civic CX Engine Noise

A colleague of mine owns a 1997 CX (hatch), I believe the B16 motor. It has 100K+ miles.

He hears a "ticking/knocking" sound that is very noticeable when cold and then gradually quiets. He's not sure if it ever completely goes away. It's been growing worse for 3 years -- apparently it started out as a slight tick, now it more closely resembles a knock.

Any thoughts? Is this a mechanical or hydraulic lifter in this motor?

Thanks much.

When's the last time the valves were adjusted?

I agree, a valve adjustment would probably fix this ticking.

That was checked -- it doesn't appear to be that.

Plus, the sound grows worse under load/low RPM -- for example, when you launch, the sound becomes more distinct... Perhaps detonation, piston slap, wrist pin??

try using the stethoscopes mechanics use... if you can get hold of one. it'll be easier for you to pinpoint the problem
