Default D16Y7 maybe ?

I have a 97 DX and the engine says it is a D16Y7 which as I understand is non-vtec which has 205,000. For some reason it sounds like it does. It makes some vtec noise at certain rpms, only when the clutch is disengaged. The wierd thing is that sometimes the so called vtec noise is always on and sometimes not. I drove 100 miles today and it is just under 3/4 tank. It seems like terrible MPG.

no not flooring it all the time. it makes the noise under normal accerlation at low rpms. and it sometimes doesn't do it at low rpms but at say the vtec rpm level, I don't have a tach but it is a guess of 4something rpm. the noise sounds like a broke vtec.

I am I correct on the car not having vtec? could this be a rattle or something?

I have the same motor but when i floor it i get a high whissleing sound around guessing 5 or 6k (also dont have a tach) and it happends everytime. as for vtec it is not but its probably a belt or somthing creating the noise when you accelerate at that certain point.

its all in your head, you want the vtec, but you dont have vtec, plus in a sohc, one can not hear or feel vtec, unless there has been a bit of work done to the vehicle

so than I am thinking of swapping it out. What is the best vtec swap. I just need a sohc vtec motor and 5-speed. how much is involved in doing this and is it possible to find a low mileage swap for cheap?

I think you have "rod knocking" vtec!

I had that problem in my car.

no, it doesn't do it in neutral or with the clutch in. it does do it under accerleration or deaccerleration. I do think that it is the tranny because now that I think of it it sounds like gear noise. but you would think that it would do it all the time.

Is the D16Y8 the only swap what about the D15B or ZC? I tried finding a Y8 but they are about impossible to find.

Can I use the Y7 accesories on the Y8 or do I have to have the Y8 stuff?

If you have an aftermarket intake, you will be able to hear V-Tec engagement on a single cam motor. You should not feel it though.

don't forget to wire the knock sensor and do the iac plug if your reusing the stock harness.

y8's are very common, try calling local junk yards. yes, pretty much everything is reusable from the y7 to the y8.

your head is in Vtec land but your car is still stuck in non-vtec Y7 land, sorry man. if you have exhaust or an intake, that extra little Kick or noise youre getting is probably a result from the intake or exhaust.

your car has over 200,000 miles you should check your valves. sometimes the valves tend to get looser as time goes on so id check the gap and your timeing.

by the way..if you are planning on swapping...i would really think about dohc....theres not too much sense in spending the money and time to swap a y8 in...just for a 20 or so hp gain.
