Default How difficult to fix... strut tower rusted through?

I have a pretty good idea of what would need to be done to fix this, my friend has a MIG welder and this guy is selling this car for pretty cheap. Has anybody done a fix like this before? I'd assume I could weld a new piece over whats there now, then maybe add some gussets on the inside of the fenderwell? What do you think, is it worth the trouble to try and fix this?

looks like my 2g DSM, how it rusted out. is this a dsm? what i did was cut out the problem area and welded in new section of sheet metal, using a ball pene hammer to contour it. came out good, i just used a mig welder and ground down the welds.

2G GSX with a 6-bolt block in it.

Looking to possibly trade my 91 Accord for it as a winter car.

WTF....I am gonna have to go home and check my 1g GSX roller I have...

Didn't know that was a common spot there. They must hold dirt and moisture up underneath.

From what I've read its a fairly common thing, especially with all the salt on the roads up here in the winter time. Someone I know had it fixed for $300, and I could probably get it done for less than that by the body shop that made my Civic, but I think I could handle it myself and save some $$.

My 2 cents is it dosent matter if he is giving the car for free ! If it is rusted that bad there it is likely that the whole car is in very bad shape. I say WALK AWAY

Yeah, if the car were free I certainly sure as hell would take it. The unibody structure of the DSM's are comprised of TONS of pieces it seems like up front. You could easily probably just remove the tower by strategically removing spotwelds and body glue. Use a strut tower from another car.

this is a "if its rusted bad there, the whole car is ****" thing. DSMs (2gs specific) rust the shock towers out . the rest of the car could be fine (mine was). you have to weld in new sheet metal, im trying to remember the size i used, i think it was 14ga.

I wouldn't take that unless it was free, your 1991 Accord will give you less headaches.

Even better, you can buy the strut tower pieces and some surrounding panels new through Mitsubishi so you don't have to hunt around looking for used possible rusty ones. I'd recommend going through places like JnZ Tuning to get these before going straight to the dealer where you'll be sure to be ripped off.
