Default Frt. engine mnt. bushing & bolt clearance question [rt1 here, repairing the Daily Driver]

Thought I'd give an intro before posting the 1st of many questions I have to fix my daily driver and let the 5 day probation period pass before stepping on it.

A Mid-atlantic Civic driver for 4 years looking to go SCCA driving next year, 323 driver for 3 years and K-car driver for 4 years. I learned to work on cars from our rarely maintained Charger that began to fall apart as I started to drive to school. Although I've enjoyed the Civic so far, I must admit I bought a pub; nonetheless I've learned many lessons since then.

I appreciate the knowledgable folk in here, I've searched the forums but found the # of questions I have collected recently began to be more hassle than ease when digging through nearly a million posts.

About the car: Is the daily driver and runs fairly smoothly (refreshed sohc zc, low mi. L3 & OEM parts), I'm trying to keep things affordable and reasonable as possible.

*If you think there's another forum that can help, I'm open to suggestions. I like the folk at GRM but to get real technical thought this place would be a good start
*Anyone follow the F1 season this year? I'm a huge fan...

Default Frt. engine mnt. clearance

Here's one:

Is there supposed to be a clearance of 1/4" or less between the front engine mount interior bushing and the 17mm bolt that runs through it?

After installing the mounts a few months ago, I noticed a 'slight' engine rock which I suspect is due to that minor gap. Since the mounts were absolute sh*t before them, I couldn't make the distinction.

Anyone done something to remove that little rock feel?

(-when shifting down, the chassis juts forward a little more; basically adding to the front dive in an undesirable way: I've now tried to compensate by engaging the clutch smoother.)

Bump, thanks.

I've tried search, spent time on rabbit trails though but nothing juicy comes up.

Basically, I can't remember if the engine mount bolt fits the front engine mount bushing perfectly or is there supposed to be play -thus causing what I think is a small bit of rocking and a rattling noise.

I hear it rattle slightly when accelerating from a stop. From the search results, I gather a play between the bushing and bolt can cause transmission problems down the line.

Anyone confirm this?

I don't exactly get what you're saying about the mount and the gap. Are you talking about how the hole in the crossmember is oval shaped? Are you talking about a quarter inch gap in the rubber bushing? Is the diameter of the hole in the bushing significantly larger than the diameter of the bolt?

Or what? If you have a camera, a picture would be great.

Oh, while you're at it, take some pics of the car. It sounds nice.

have somebody rev the engine while you watch it....if you've got excessive movement, you need some mount inserts. if the front mount is loose and the engine is rocking, it is going to degrade all the mounts one by one.

mahatma:

I've revved it while watching the mount and I don't think I have 'excessive movement' primarily because of the other mounts I replaced -especially the rear mount. In fact, I don't think it's too much pressure on the front mount; its just that when I'm moving along at high revs between shifts, I don't want that gap/rattle to affect my tranny and give me that little jolt/rock feel i get when downshifting. Its the only thing that's marring the whole pleasure of new engine mounts in my mind. But if that's how honda designed, I'll deal with it.

bagpipe goatee:

Not talking about the 1/4" gap in the rubber bushing itself, I think it's supposed to be designed that way to allow for fore/aft rocking of the engine. Specifically the differences between the interior diameter of the metal bushing versus the diameter of the engine mount bolt.

Sorry, no camera but I attached a diagram from slhonda.

The car isn't pretty by any means, in fact I have washed the car a whole 2 times since I bought it in 02'. I think the dirt has evolved into a force field. I get happy when I drive in the rain now since I cleaned the sunroof drain tube -no more water on the floor, I feel like I'm giving the car a rinse. It does what I ask it to do, its nice to me so I'm nice to it.

Basically,

The front engine mount (transmission mount to be precise) that I bought from Majestic Honda, #13 in the exploded view, has a metal bushing the engine mount bolt goes thru to secure it to the front crossmember.

When I was installing the engine mounts a few months ago, I noticed that the metal bushing within the front engine mount was basically too big for the relatively skinny engine mount bolt and just as i suspected there's a metal-to-metal noise i hear when the engine moves while revving.

Now, I don't remember if the engine mount bolt fit the old mount perfectly. If it did, then Majestic Honda may have sent me the wrong engine mount. But if the bushing hole is supposed be larger than the engine mount bolt -creating that 'gap' I'm talking about- then I'll move on.

I can tell you on at least two of my engine swaps (the ones that i paid attention to that sepcific mount) that the bolt deffinetly had some play in it, but never a 1/4" that seems a lot to me. possibly it is a 92-95 mount or something like that because they are slightly different. not sure though.

Thanks for the info, I'm less suspicious. Still would appreciate a confirm from anyone doing their front mount.

Since my mounts were so bad before I can't gauge the difference.

If only that I was paying more attention to the old mount when I took it out.
