Default help! check engine light on and rpm's wont go above 4k in any gear

i was driving home today (this being the second day my check engine light was on) and my rpm's spontaniously stopped going above 4k. they just bounced there like i had a rev limiter at 4k. i was in second when i noticed it, so i put it into third, and tried going up to 4k and it did the same thing. on a large straight i got it to 4k in fourth gear and it did the same. im assuming it will do the same for 5th. and it was completely consitent doing this.
help!!! thanks!

If there's a code, GET THE CODE. Doesn't matter if you do it yourself or take it to Autozone. Just get the code.

And yeah, you won't be able to get past 4000 rpm because the code, whatever it might be, is preventing you. It temporarily lowers the rev limit to prevent people from blowing up their engines when a problem exists. Only certain codes will do this...

Just to reiterate, we cannot help you unless you find out the CEL code...

it had to be a failure of a sensor since the engine is in "limp home mode"....
