92 Civic Cam Gear Broke off while driving ?
My buddy was driving his Civic home from work -
He noticed some squeaky belt sounds then the car stopped running..
Looked under the hood and touched the cam gear and noticed it snapped completey off the cam ....
Is this normal ?
Why would that happen ?
If we pull the Valve cover off will we be able to tell if the valves are bent ?
Thanks for the help...

Wow this sounds like another problem on another forum LOL.
Anywayz, I had an old motor do that to me also, it seized up because of bad oil I am assuming. I never took it apart or anything but if it is shearing gears then that means the cam isn't moving and the head is seized up. I would definately start looking for another head ASAP.

I think we found another Head for cheap ...
Wow - So the head is seized then ? Block prob ok ?
How do you verify the head is seized -
I guess we could manually turn the cam and should spin easily ?
How to verify Block is ok ? Spin the crank ?

The block should be ok.
You can either try and spin the cam manually and see if it turns (I doubt it will) or you can put another gear on with another key and try and start it, if it shears the key again, your head is definately seized.
Once the head is off look at all the pistons to make sure there isn't any gouges on them etc. Spin the crank and see if it still spins freely, if all that checks out then your good to go.
Hope all of this helps you out!

was the timing belt ever replaced? any work done around that area? this can happen if the timing belt is to tight.

This motor is all stock - nothing aftermarket.
It was purchased USED over 100k miles..- not sure the belt was ever replaced ??
If no t.belt replacement was done, is it capable of riping metal in half and shearing the stock cam gear off ?

since you said it had over 100k on it, chances are the belt was replaced. personally i changed my belt around 60k, so it's not unlikely since it is recommended to replace around that amount of miles.

no, highly unlikely.
