For the Type R experts out there - Civic Vti/SiR Clone?
Because of new North American opportunities for FIA-homologated rally cars, I am looking at the possibility of B16 powered Civics. The short question is, understanding that I could buy a '98 or newer EK9 Civic R, what is the most econimical/feasible way to end up with the mechanical equivalent of a '96+ EK4 Civic HB that came with a B16? The real thing is known as an SiR or Vti in other parts of the world, if I am keeping all the letters straight.
Do I have it right that the Si HB of that generation was sold in Canada? I have mixed info regarding engines - B16A2 or -A4? Is the shell the same as a DX, for example? The homologation papers are expensive and I wanted to get a reality check on the idea before spending the $$.
Thanks in advance for whatever info you can provide!

Not that this helps too much, but the Canadian Si is the equivalent of the USDM EX.
I don't think they ever got a B16-powered hatch. They got the 99-00 Si coupe badged as an SiR.

Is it possible that you could just build the car yourself? or does the powerplant have to come in that physical car?
it would seem to me to be the cheapest to get a 96 cx/dx hatch from the states and put a jdm b16a1 powerplant. Total should be roughly 7-8k
But it doenst sound like that would be possible if that model of car was never sold anywhere in north america, and from the looks of it, it hasnt.

The FIA is the world motorsport sanctioning body (like F1 and WRC) so it doesn't really care about what individual federal agencies think - which is kind of the problem, since rally cars need to be road licensed somehow. It publishes specs for individual cars and if you are going to compete in FIA-sanctioned events, they are suppposed to adhere to them. Group N (the closest to street-stock preparation levels) includes the '96+ EK4 Civic - HB only, I think - with the B16A2/S4C(?) engine and transmission package (Vti/SiR?).
Please note that I am on record as NOT being an expert on the specs and designations - that's why I am asking.
I THINK that the B16A2 came in the Del Sol VTEC of the same vintage, right? If so...
What would the feds/states think about certification and licensing of a
96 DX with a '96 Del Sol engine? (It would remain effectively stock.)
How close in spec would the final product be to the "real thing"? What doesn't match?
What is the market price for the Del Sol drivertrain? I don't want to support the chopshop industry
...
I could grey market import something, I imagine, probably from Asia? But it would e (a) right drive, which I have done but am not thrilled about, and (b) probably much more difficult to license. I could also just do a later Civic R (which seems to be FIA listed) but that would be more $$ - right?

I dont know what the laws are in all states, but I live in california (the most smog strict) and you can put any motor in any car as long as it is from the same year or newer and of the same make (honda). It must also retain all smog equipment etc.
The motor you want is a b16a2. You should be able to pick up the complete swap (axles, ecu etc) for about 2500. And you still might need an engine harness but I am not sure but that is about 100 bux.
Other then that, the SIR/VTI had different cloth on the seats, molding on the bumpers. They also should have 4 wheel discs equivelent to any intergra from 94 up and the 99 civic SI.

Where did yours come from? Federalization issues? I pretty much assumed that this answer would have some inherent problems...

Certainly one of the nicest street/performance HB's that I have seen but I would have to take off all of the cool bits for it to be legal to race...
