Default how to fix poor '92 Prelude lighting??

I have a 1992 Honda Prelude Si, american model, and
I'm (very) dissatisfied with the lighting I'm getting
from the headlights.

A previous owner changed the headlight "pod" from the
american 2 light (hi and lo) with a separate running light
to the european (?, Japan ?) version, where the "pod"
holds all 3 lights.

That owner spliced in connections for H4 lo beams and H1
high beams. As far as I can tell the running lights were
left untouched.

Currently, the bulbs are:

lows - Hella H83140272 = 12v 60/55w H4 Xenon blue
highs - A1(R)C (<<brand??) Xenon - 50H1PW - H1
running - 194

One problem is that the low beam lights just don't seem
very bright. Now, these H4 bulbs are 3 wire feeding 2
lighting filaments, and this Prelude is a 2 wire system.
Currently there is one open connection, which possibly is
supposed to get a lead from the high beams, turning it on
when the highs come on.

A second problems is that the adjustment "screws" just don't
seem to be moving the lighting very much. This setup has 8
adjustments, a horizontal and a vertical for each of the 4
main lights. Is it possible that the "screws" can be hit and
miss with the parts they're driving?

When I position the car to shine the headlights at a wall, the
brightest part of the light pattern is not round, but horizontally
rectangular/trapazoidal, with much dimmer bands above and below.
I assume this is the way these european light reflectors are
supposed to shine. Whereas, traditional american lighting is
round that turns to oval when hitting the street at the downward
angle. Does that sound correct?

----

What I'm trying to achieve is brighter than normal street lighting,
"performance" lighting if you will, that isn't so *obviously* way
too illegal, or blinding to oncoming traffic, that I will get pulled
over by the police here in California. I don't mind illegal so much,
I just don't want to be a total bust.

Also, I'm not the least bit concerned with looking "cool", or having
the latest fad in lighting. I'd prefer that the physical appearance
of the lights in the pod to look relatively stock, i.e., no projector
bulbs, etc.

Since, imo, generally, american automotive lighting has trailed european
automotive lighting, I figure this system has the potential to be good.
Hopefully, without me having to spend the bucks to replace alot of it.

Any ideas on what to do? Bulbs? Wiring? Fixtures?

Thanks.

get a whiter... light... 4300k is about the best light output you can get. So invest in some really nice h4 bulbs... or pay for some hid's and get a retrofit.

I have jdm lights. which has the same set up. h4 low h1 high. My adjusters work fine though. I am lowered so I had to adjust the lights a bit. I brought them up to a bit higher then they were and the have good light output.

Is there anyway the lenses are dirty? inside or out.

I remember the adjusters being really slow. just use a big phillips head. I hope this helps.

Also if you are very dissatisfied still. I am sure you can get a bit of money for the headlights and just buy usdm. and I just so happen to have two sets for sale or trade.

I have a set too... decent condition, off of my '93 with about 115k miles of wear and tear on them.

well i like my jdm housing compared to usdm for light output. i get flashed all the time when i have my lows on b/c there so bright (jdm) and not b/c there aimed to high. the bulbs are just good (oem honda japan bulbs) and now with my white prelude with usdm headlights i can barely see poop. but yeah i do have 2 sets of usdms for sell or trade also.

op try silverstar bulbs they are bright i have them in 1 of my usdm sets and its pretty decent.

make sure your bulbs are clean. fingerprints leave oils on the bulb which kill the life if the bulbs and effect light output.
