Default 4G prelude VTEC ignition timing

Can anyone walk me through how I am supposed to retard the timing on my 93 VTEC? I want to get my nitrous running, but I have to knock the timing back 3 degrees first.

do you have a timing light? i actually dont know if one is necessary.

tools needed:
paper clip
10 or 12mm socket + extension

warm up car to normal operating temp. turn it off. bend the paper clip into a thin u shape. stick your hand behind the radio from the drivers side. should be a small blue connector with brown and white wires. thats the service check engine light thingy. jump this by sticking in the paperclip. turn back on the car and you should have a check engine light.

i recommend you make a line with a key or some type of engraving across the metal parts where the bolts hold down the distributor. that way, when you move it, you will be able to see how far its off, and you will know when the lines match up, where stock is. then loosen the three bolts on the distributor housing. hook up the timing light if you have one. you can pull the black plug next to the engine code and mess with the timing light if you want to. with the distributor loose, you would be able to turn it towards the firewall (advance) or towards you (retard). you will the the line you make separate and approximately 1mm of displacement is 1 degree. so your line will be about 3mm down. turn off car. pull out paper clip. reset ecu if you want. turn on car.

of course with a timing light it would be more accurate then the 1mm ~ 1 degree. but you get the idea.

that picture will give you an idea about the line. i recommend you do it so it eliminates the need of the timing light. the purple box is before without any mark. the red is after you key a mark across. the blue is after you have advanced the timing, you can see how far off the two lines are. in your case, the left line will be lower because you will be retarding.
