Default EF suspension

Im going to drop my ef but I was just wondering your opinions on it. Some people are telling me just get coilovers, others told me get coilovers and struts, and someone else said to just cut the springs. Let me know what u think, also will eg coilovers fit on my ef. ? thanks

Search works for trial users

You give us a question so open ended no one could give you any real help.

Come back with something we can help with, or rephrase your question to give us the info we'd need to help you, like what is your car for how much are you going to spend etc.

We are not mind readers

you should just get lowering springs, trust me, unless you have a K to spend on coilovers, get a good set of lowering springs man. People always say, "get coilovers, get coilovers, get coilovers," but if unless you have a grand to spend......get lowering springs. The only difference is that on a very good pair of coilovers, you can adjust your ride height whenever you want....kinda dumb, cuz i dont see people being that hardcore, and doing that. LOWERING SPRINGS!!!!

Depending on what duties the car will be doing(autox road race etc.) he might need coilovers, also with the advantage of coilovers, you also get the struts. If he just buys lowering springs, chances are they are going on stock, or close to stock struts, and will probably blow them out, so then he would have to buy new struts also, when he could have a decient set of coilovers to start with. To the OP, are you just putting them on a dd, or a race car or? Oh, and dont cut your springs!!!!

if you want to ride low, you need to worry about only 1 thing.

shock travel.

a direct solution would be to use GC extended top hats. or make your own.

secondly, you want stiff springs to help limit shock travel. for this i recommend cutting your springs. yes, i recommend cutting springs, i am not joking. you will get lower, and stiffer.

or just get the ebay coilover (sleeve) kit for $30. those springs are so damn stiff theyre only good for limiting travel.

with stiff springs and extended top hats, nothing but physical limitations in the top of the fender height will be of issue. at that point, you can just cut your engine bay quite frankly.

this is real advice. i am not joking.

never cut ur springs unless u want the worst ride over, lowering springs are a good start but don't buy cheap ones, and if ur goin for pro style **** u ain't gotta worry about and have a grand go for full suspension swap, go with k-sport or somethin brand name, U GET WHAT U PAY FOR!!!!!

the cut springs along with stock shocks made ur ride so damn bouncy, but cut springs almost gaurantee two things: low ride, and shitty ride, ebay sells lowering springs for under 100 bucks, do that before cutting

cut springs
I ride skunk2 springs on stock shocks, I don't have a problem with how it rides. But I'm getting rid of this set up soon because I may be getting D2 Coilovers for Christmas $700, and very nice quality from what I heard.

i actually just dropped my EF sedan tonight.

i dont know much about car suspension since ive been a truck guy but a friend of mine hooked me up with coilovers

they were on a 97 sedan i think. they fit fine on the stock shocks, just removed the rubber bushing right under the top of the shock tower for the fronts. there was a bunch of play inside but we put some big o-rings on it and electrical tape to make it snug. kind of ghetto i guess you could say but its worked out great the ride was barely affected. ( it may be becuase the shocks were still in good condition and still on stock wheels) only problem i ran in to was speed bumps, i have no idea how you guys do it haha. i scraped ALOT gonna take alot of practice getting used to this low car deal since ive been a truck guy for awhile.

ill post up some pics tommorow when theres some light out.

some of that might of not made sense since im still new to this and its my first time dealing with car suspension but i hope it can give you a little insight into what you want to do.

and IMO just coilovers are fine.

Yea i forgot to add but i got a 90 dx hatchback w/ stock motor I just want to lower it a lil bit so i guess im gona go with some lowering springs for now on the stock struts. But also the only differnce between coilovers and lowering springs is coilovers are adjustable ....thanks

Just snag some H&R Sport springs for $170 shipped. Waaay better than cut springs and cheap. nice drop and ride.

Half-assing a car is stupid.

Since all '88-05 Civics have coilovers as stock equipment, "coilover" is probably one of the most misused terms on this board (alongside "rims" and "struts" and "motor"). It's pretty exhausting to argue with idiots and it never gets me anywhere, so I rarely nit-pick anymore unless proper term usage is crucial to my point.

your supposed to go over speed bumps in a lowered car slowly and sideways so you dont smack your header, oilpan, or anything under your car on the speed bump. i have had lowered cars since i got my license 7 years ago. you could go ksport, their coilovers are around 700 and there are good reviews on them. you could also go with something like the yellow or red konis with a firm spring like something from eibach, h&r, etc.

sadly i have to drive my baby in the winter too. And in Saskatchewan we get F load of snow so coilovers is the only way to go, so i can adjust the ride height.
And from what ive heard of about cuting ur springs, its a pretty bad idea in anyway u look at it.
