Default Daily Driver Project

I posted this in the swap thread already but... I have a 95 Civic EX and want to drop in a B16. I need it to be reliable because I commute about 30 miles round trip 4 days out of the week. I also need this thing to pass smog. It would be nice to keep it automatic but I will most likely have to convert it to manual. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

wait...what's the question?

1) do I think it can be reliable? yes.
2) will it pass smog? depends. You can make a 95 Civic with a b16 pass smog, but there are some catches.
3) auto or manual? your preference.

How can I make the car pass smog and what are the catches? I would prefer automatic but what would my options be?

you mean like...auto or manual?

You can convert it to a manual with a little extra money - and this would be the ideal time. Make sure you pick up a manual tranny with your b16 (since you can't use your d-series tranny, anyway). There are number of write-ups on the conversion.

Yes, the car should be reliable if most OEM parts are in working order and in tact
Will it pass smog?...Yes if its a USDM motor...if not USDM...try to get USDM oem parts and swap them with the JDM parts. Emission wise. and the automatic question. Im not sure if theres a automatic transmission for a B16...to my knowledge.

I meant what are my options as in... what type of tranny could fit lol I didnt know of any automatic tranny's for a b16...

I've looked through the california vehicle code and it says the engine needs to be the same year or newer... any way I can make sure the engine is from a 95 SIR?? I was looking at getting the motor from hmotorsonline

You could pick up an auto LS and that will swap in. Also if you really want the B16 you could get a long block B16 and add an auto LS trans and go that route. Although finding the auto B16 ecu is going to be hard. But im sure you could get a chipped auto p28 to run the B16. Theres alot of options here but none of them are going to be cheap.

Well for any motor I get, I need to have all the emissions parts from that car. my question, were there any usdm b-series that came with an automatic?
If the answer is no, then is there any possible way to have my car pass BAR inspection while keeping an automatic transmission? If not, then looks like I'll have to do an auto to manual conversion. Im now considering a gsr... any input would be greatly appreciated.

bump, I wanna know if there is any way to keep my car automatic while still passing BAR here in CA. Were there any usdm b-series cars that were automatic? Can I convert a manual ECU to an automatic (ive heard of auto-manual)? Hell, if there was a way to get a manual ECU to run my car long enough to pass BAR (I seriously doubt it) , id do that and then get a chipped ECU that could run an automatic after getting my BAR sticker. Converting to a manual is a last resort.

I apologize in advance for these Noob questions...
