I don't recall who did it but it was on the roadracing and autocross forum. He stripped the paint, polished and buffed the shock some but the key is that he put many coats of clear coat on them. If you do not paint or clear coat them to protect the mild steel, they will begin to rust immediately.

Yea didnt even think about the rust factor....scratch that idea then lol Polishing aluminum is one thing but I hate rust. Will proably just paint them gunmetal Thanks!

Really dosent matter since the car is not my daily driver and is just a fun toy. I wash and wax the car every weekend I drive it so its no biggie to get under there and do a quick polish before I put it away for the week.

yup. i'm going to dissasemble mine soon to repolish and clear coat. Do you have any reccomendations on a particular clear coat to use Lee? I would think that any of the automotive varieties would suffice. Any thicker and my GC sleeves will scrape the paint off; i have the older no longer made full length sleeves.

I have never used any DIY clear coat so i have not suggestions. I just leave my shocks yellow as God and the Dutch (quite similar if you ask them) meant it to be.

i remember that post also, I had started to strip my yellows last week but only got half of one done, they are a real bitch to strip. I was using that aircraft stripper and the paint got all gummy, didnt bubble all up like ive seen on some parts. Im wishing now I had just painted over the yellow. For some reason I was thinking the shock body was aluminum, trying to polish steel is going to be a bitch. I will post some pics later of the progress.

yeah 94eg had the polished konis, but where the heck has he been lately? i have been waiting for him to respond himself to this thread. i thought he'd be all over it by now.

If your using coil-overs, or lowering springs, I wouldn't use the dust covers.

Koni's yellow paint is notorious for chipping easily. If you do a search, you will find a few threads about it. There is also a thread about making dust covers out of steering rack boots. As for the paint, I took maters into my own hands, and stripped all the yellow off, wire brushed and clear coated them. They turned out pretty nice. I just hope the clear holds up (it was a lot of work)...

Stupid We-todd-did-racing is gone, so all my images craped out. I re-hosted them, so here goes. If you have any questions, feel free to ask... PS: Thanks Tyson for sending me the link to this thread. PS: don't let paint stripper anywhere near the shock shaft or seals (you've been warned)...

Half polished w/ wire cup brush:

U have to explain to me why the hell u would take time out of ur day to polish ur struts, what a waste of time, dont u think u could have been doing something alittle more constructive (i think sleeping is more constructive then polishing ur struts). I could understand if it was a show car but ur car is far from it!!!

looks great, thanks for posting all the pics. Ive got one of mine stripped down but will have to wait till it warms up more as I dont have a garage to strip the others in. How is the clearcoat holding up? Do they still hold the same polished look as when you put them on?

The paint is holding up quite good. It's been over a year since the install, and there is no visible rust (just dirt & grime). The coarse wire cup brush really shines up the shock body. Depending on how lightly you apply coats of the clear, the finished product can be quite shinny. I simply dusted many light coats, so my clear finish is rather matte looking. The only place they are visible from, is behind the vehicle. It's kinda nice because people can't tell what shocks you have...

I mainly did this project because lots of the yellow paint was chipped off when I received the shocks new. Koni yellow doesn't stick too well as has been discussed in a few other threads. Thumbs up to them for using the environmentally friendly stuff anyways...

You'd be surprised just how easy this project was. I really enjoy working on my car though, and Vegas weather is relatively nice all year round...
