Default cooling fan

Does your cooling fan always switch on when the car is warmed up and idling? Could my car be overheating if the temperature gauge is in the middle and the cooling fan does not turn on?

Thanks

how far does the needle go? take a pic. it shouldn't go more than halfway across the gauge.
