Heater core removal? Temp slider wont go all the way to right
My heat is not currently working because I cant seem to get the **** to go all the way to the right. I played with the connections behind the ashtray and they dont want to move. I think my heater core exploded this summer, would that be the reason? And does anyone have a link to a step by step DIY dash removal so that I can replace my core? Thanks in advance.
Make sure it's not the temp slider cable that isn't damaged. If youre heater core was busted, I thiknk you'd see a lot of coolan under your car.
Well when it exploded coolant went all over my carpet. I looked at all the stuff underneath, it all looks fine except it wont stay in the rightmost position. It just slides itself back to halfway.
So did you get it fixed when it exploded?
Could be something obstructing one of the vents when moving. I had a car once that had brush dropped down the vent along with the face of the vent itself.

No, I just had my mechanic wire the two hoses together to bypass the core. The only reason I'm asking this question is because I dont trust him and I was hoping maybe there might be an easier fix than to replace the core. If not being able to slide the slider to the right is a distinct symptom of a blown heater core, I've answered my own problem. Also, anyone have a link to a step by step for dash removal? I dont have a helms.
Your core will not effect your temp slider. Unless someone replaced it and screwed up your linkage. Now, he did loop the two hoses together, and the one hose has your heater adjuster in line. Probably your issue. What don't you trust with the mechanic? If you have antifreeze all over your floorboards, theres not much else it would be. The heater core is all aluminum, the lines connect out in the engine bay. Even if it didn't explode, its got a leak somewhere.
Your heat doesn't work, because there is no coolant getting to your heater core, not because you can't get the slider to the heat.

So theoretically when I replace my heater core the **** will go into the rightmost position? None of the behind dash stuff was modified in any way, just the two coolant lines were joined.
You need to look where the two lines were connected and see if you still have the valve that will adjust your heat. It's right by the firewall, lower middle of it. You'll see two lines coming out, or two aluminum or copper, ends for lack of the right word. There is a small cable that comes out, like wire, has a loop on the end and that fits on the valve so when you move the heat adjust it adjust that. Look into that. If thats messed up or missing you'll need that, with the heater core.
Looking back, the only reason I made this thread was to see if maybe I could get away with not changing my heater core. Thank you for the resonses.. although, I still cant find a good DIY dash removal thread? Any links?
You don't have to, but if you don't fix the leak and hook it up that'll make a nice mess again
I don't have a heater core in my race/toy car, but i don't drive that when its cold so yeah.
Dash removal, i can't remember isn't hard, just have to find all the stupid bolts, you should have to take it out out, just up enough to get all the heater crap outta the way.
Good luck though.
