Default d15b vtec d15b 3 stage confusion

This forum is to talk about the JDM d15b vtec and jdm d15b 3 stage vtec there is indeed a difference between the two. I see tons and tons of forums where people think they have three stage vtec when infact they do not. In this i will explain the differnces, what to look for and info about each motor.

The first motor i will look at is the JDM d15b vtec. This motor is and obd-1 motor that comes with a p08 ecu and is used some times with p28 from the d16z6. This motor comes in the 3-door EG4 VTi and the 4-door EG8 Ferio VTi. This is a 16 valve motor that goes into vtec at about 5300-5500 rpm that produces 130hp at 6800rpm and redlines at 7200 rpm. This has one vtec mode and has one vtec solenoid people get this motor and think it is 3 stage when it is not, most people buy this motor at http://www.hmotorsonline.com/s...30019

Before i say anymore i want to say i love the jdm d15b vtec its a great little motor three of my friends have had it and all got it off of hmotorsonline.com they are great little motors and you'll love the vtec it pulls pretty decent.

Next motor the JDM d15b 3 stage vtec yes 3 stage does exsist iv seen people arguee that it does not exsist. It is a rare motor hard to find and if you do find it you most likley dont have the ecu which is a obd-2 P2J ecu this is an important ecu because you have two vtec solenoids one is for the first stage of vtec which is pretty much vtec-e when you are under 2500 rpm you are only using 12 valves this of course is to get better gas millage and is a very lean burn like 20:1. When you get above 2500 rpm the vtec-e turns off then you are running normal engine which is considered the second stage you wont reach the next vtec until 5300-5500 rpm this will be the second vtec solenoid that is your power vtec the wilder cam profile that gives you 130 hp that is the third stage of the motor. The only way you have a 3 stage is if you have two vtec solenoids like in this picture

here is a more up close picture

The motors are pretty much the same in everything else one is just a mix of power and economy which is great. The bad thing is i heard the vtec messes up alot dosen't work right thats why honda stopped putting them out, at least this is what i have heard. The 3 stage comes in the EK3 VTi and Ferio Vi.

I hope people read this and see that there is a difference post any other info on the jdm d15b 3stage vtec that you know of because this seems to be a bit of a mystery motor not alot of info about it just alot of confusion between the d15b vtec and d15b 3 stage vtec. I will be buying a d15b here soon and putting a 16g turbo on it in my crx, its a fun little motor and there price is very resonable.

d15b3stage crank doesn't have d16 rod journals. it uses the shitty d15 sized ones with p07 d15z1 VX rods

3stage =

p08 d15b =

FINALLY!!!! The light is shed!
I'm installing my JDM D15b Vtec tomorrow as a matter of fact and i'll take some pics to post here. My z6 is comming out and getting ready for boost.
I thought I'd have to buy a p08 to make the 3 stages work but after reading this I just realized I don't have a 3 stage vtec
Thanx, Si 2, keep up the good work.
