Headgasket replacement question
Do i have to take out my carshafts and everything to replace the headgasket or can i remove the head as a whole by just removing the 9 or 10 main headbolts??
Ive looked at a haynes manual, all i can find is the complete assembly of the head

Just take the head bolts off. May need to tap it with a rubber mallet or pry with pry bar to seperate it from old head gasket/block. Haynes manual should have arrows pointing to spots you can pry at.

1) Put pistons in TDC (refer to manual)
2) unplug everything that connect to the head. Dont worry about unpluging stuff from the intake manifold as it doesnt NEED to be removed.
3)remove valve cover
4) remove head bolts in the right order (refer to manual)
5) remove bolts that bolts intake manifold from Head
6) loosen timing belt tension nut and slide off belt off cam gear.
7) remove headers
8) have someone push intake manifold away from head so you can remove Head as a whole.
9)clean your surrfaces real good. (good time to clean valves and intake manifold ports)
10) install gasket and do everything in reverse order.

here is the ports for mani cleaned. (partially)

Head is off. Notice mani is still there

here you can see mani is being push out to remove/install head, then slid stud in mani and bolt down.

Oh **** I forgot about about the bolts on DOHC's.
well what I said then applies to both but if its a DOHC then cams must be removed to.

I just replaced my snaped cam shaft, like a week ago. I didnt use anything to clean the cams. or anything in that matter off with any special solvent. I placed the cams in a shamie cloth, so that no fibers will get on it using a towel. When you'r putting it back together, get some engine lube. Put it under, and on top og the cams where there held on.
The valves are connected to the camshafts which drive the carshaft which sits on top of the brogenshiber. Make sure you use a torque steer wrench to remove the carshaft.
