maybe he wants to put stage 4's in guys jeez...

no but seriously you dont need to take them out...there are studs screwed into the block and go through the head...there are i believe 8-12 of these you remove after removing the valve cover and it all comes out in one chunk...

oh and please get a haynes or helmes manual...it makes like about 10 times easier and makes bathroom reading a blast HAHAHA

head bolts are located under the both cam shafts for dohc motors. i believe you gotta put everything back the way you took it out, supposely the origonal bolts in it's place due to ware and tear. also put cylinder to top dead center and allign both cam sprockets' dots facing eachother with both arrow up, put timing belt back on. becareful tightening the bolts, they are very durable and will break, only place to get them is dealer and dealers are a rape.

You have to take the cams out to get the head off. The head bolts are under the cams and there is no way to get to them without taking the cams out... When you take them off, don't remove the cam gears. Make sure the Arrows on the cam gears that are pointing up, are straight up. There will also be a mark on each of the cam gears and they will need to face each other. Make sure you get everything lined up properly and you don't have the timing belt off by any teeth. Also make sure that you torque everything down in proper sequence and in to the proper torque spec.

See the mark on the left that's etched into the cam gear? Both the intake and exhaust side will have that mark and they will have to face each other. That's what I was talking about.

dude i was just like you when i did mines, follow the book, keep track of what comes out, try to put them back the place they came out of. (set them a side) you might wanna get a torque bar cause those bolts are very sensitive. i broke like five and cost me about $50 to replace, that's almost another headgasket. the only part i had trouble on was starting the car back up because i had the timing on backwards. (you might wanna use some gasket maker around the valve cover gasket's loop for the camshafts, mines tends to leak from there.

Read the sections on removing the head and also on installing and setting the cam timing. The Haynes covers putting everything at Top Dead Center for removal and install. Only you can decide if you are up for the challenge and whether you can keep from destroying your car. No pressure there hugh?

Just for some encouragement to you, I hydrolocked my car, bent a rod and was broke financially. Necessity is the mother of all invention. I had no experience taking an engine apart. I had a Haynes manual and some hand tools. I read the sections many times and pulled the head on top and oil pan from underneath. I pulled the bent rod and piston assembly and took it to a machine shop to swap the old piston to a new rod. Long story short, this happened about 55K miles ago and all is well. I now have over 303K miles and it runs like a gem. I wish you good luck.

Now, as for the guys who say he doesn't need to pull the cams to remove the head, how does he get to the head bolts if they are under the cams?

oh yeah, if i'm recalling correcty, you might wanna put the first cylinder to tdc when taking the cams out, at tdc there will be less or none pressure on cam lobes, this is the way you take it out and put them back in, there is i site i found the info when i did it, i'll try to post.

are you kidding me? how did you do yours. there are main bolts that hold the head and block together located right under the camshafts. do a dohc search on a bare head, you will see the holes lined up along with the cams.

He made the comment to the people thinking you don't Need to remove the cams,
and was asking them how they would manage to remove the headbolts.

Lol, and when you've replace the head/cams, trying to get the timing belt back on,
double check once or twice that everything is still lined up TDC.
