Default Back to Stock (or, on Enjoying the R Again)

So for those of you who don't know, I've been taking my car back to stock. My Mugen wing is gone, as are the Kosei K-1s. I recently sold my Spoon N1, and put the entire OEM exhaust system back on.

I got to a point where I actually resented my car. It was so loud that it hurt my ears if I drove it for more than 30 minutes, and got me a pretty hefty ticket in MA for modified exhaust. Conversation was impossible, as was appreciation of any music I was playing. I started to have thoughts of selling it for something more sedate, less obnoxious, and quieter.

But when I changed the exhaust back to OEM, all those thoughts disappeared. I started pulling the car up and down the rev range, rather than just getting to 80mph as quick as I could because the car is quiet at that speed in top gear. I can talk on the phone while driving it. I can talk to my passengers. And the sound is still amazing - it takes me back to the first year of having the car, when the VTEC switch-over sent chills up my spine.

I see a lot of people who modify the hell out of their ITRs and then tire of them, wanting something a little more practical. Sometimes I think we fail to realize, after modding the ITR beyond any reasonable need, that it is still a very practical, very liveable car. It's simply that few of us are willing to take the steps 'backward' in performance necessary to enjoy the car in its simplest, purest form. But it really works...I have banished all thoughts of selling the car, and realized that the notion of 'outgrowing' the ITR is pretty silly.

I'm surprised you were able to be ticketed out-of-state for a law like that. Like, if I go to CA, and I have a B20 swap, I don't see how I could get ticketed for having a CA-illegal modification.

Either way, for joining the Aging Men Club I'd prefer to drive my woman's stock Impreza any day of the week, just for the noise factor.

this is why I kept my stock exhaust even after extensive modifications and refuse to sell it because I know one day Ill want to revert back to it one way or the other. unfortunately it wont work on my current setup but my current custom exhaust isnt half bad either.

Me too, back to stock for me. Well at least as close to stock as I can be. Decided to go D stock for auto-X. We need way too deep of pockets to compete well in STX, so I said screw this. Time to go stock.

As people get older different things matter to them, but any true type R owner should always ask "why am I selling the car " when time comes to do so. As Ross said, some might realize that they did all the things to the car that are making them sell the car in the first place. (forged internals anyone? been there done that)

RTW DC2R if that stock exhaust is sitting somewhere now, might as well put it in garbage.
Once it was on the car acid forms in it, and the only thing that stops it from falling apart is heat cycle process and burning off. Once you take it off, let it sit for some time, and put it back on, if it gives you more than a year, I would be surprised (this depends on length of time you had it sit off the car...)

damn...this is some news to read as ive been on the same thought boat lately. i actually MISS certain aspects of the car when it was stock, pure and simple from the factory. i get the feeling that as we older itr owners keep the cars for longer periods, we actually outgrow the need or desire to change things for "better" parts. im glad i saved most of my stock parts...makes the transition back easier WHEN the time comes. maybe this is the trend as time goes by and the car's value modestly goes up. less and less kids get interested in it and the more mature go back to basics...

I agree.

My only mods are an intake (because I don't have the stock one), HIDs and mugen 5-Ways.

The 5-Ways feel OK on the softest setting and I like the adjustability and look. I didn't like having an "upgraded" exhaust, I had 2 different set-ups for less than a few months. I didn't like being another kid with a loud exhaust, now all the noises it makes are close to stock.

Fujitsubo RM01A is also real quiet. It gets noisier when you really step on the go-pedal, but cruising around it's right about the same volume as stock.

all that trouble just for that? all you had to do was just get turbo and it would be quite all over again... i personally don't see the point of few mods cause the car won't be that much faster and all the troubles mentioned in this thread. for me its either all or nothing..

The purist goes back to his roots.

I am one of those who can appreciate both. Stock and modified. I guess it all comes down to what you like and what appeals to you. To each his own.

I love my loud ITR.

TODA Header, Omnipower Test-pipe, DC Sports Exhaust, AEM 3" CAI... I absolutely love the sound of it. It's actually pretty quiet during cruising, sounds stock. But when I get on it, it's an entirely different story.

I thought about getting my ITR back to stock... But then I realized how much I enjoy being loud. Haha.

Running a RSR muffler from a buddy for cheap...not loud at all...all I hear is
intake noise from the aem cold air intake and the eldebrock manifold. Very livable.

Really? My stocker was sitting for like 3-4 years in my folks' basement. Should I expect it to fail soon?
