Default Tranny problem after rebuild

I have a 93 SI 4WS with a 00 euro-r motor and tranny in it. Me and a friend recently cracked open the tranny and replaced syncros 1-5, and the sleeve and hub for gears 3-5. While we were at it we also put in a fidanza 8 lb flywheel with an exedy stage 1 clutch. After putting everything back together i had some major tranny issues. Here's a list of the symptons. Keep in mind, these all happen randomly and at different times.

1. Doesn't go into gear, stuck in neutral.
2. Once in gear won't come out of gear
3. pops out of gear on its own while driving
4. starts grinding while not even shifting, just driving
5. Car idles good when clutch is in but once i release clutch (while in neutral of course) the car sputters and almost dies and then continues to idle with a whistle and car continues to operate with a constant whistle (this one always happens).

This was all very perplexing to me and my friend until the other day when I stumbled into the fact that we actually forgot to put the new pilot bearing into the new fly wheel. This of course is the first course of action we are going to take and hope that this is the cure to all of my problems. We are going to crack open the tranny again and take a look at everything because after a little bit of driving with the problems mentioned there was quite a bit of metal shavings collected on my tranny plug. What do you guys think? Does this sound like it is purely a pilot bearing problem or perhaps something else as well? Thanks a head of time for the help

Yeah, it sounds like your problems are all in the tranny itself...take it back off and check it out. The pilot bearing is not really a big deal (compared to the problems you're having)...some flywheels don't even have them from what I've seen.

aww ****, that is not what i wanted to hear Well thanks for the input. Do you happen to know what WOULD be happening if it was the the pilot bearing problem?

Maybe a slight grinding noise or resistance I would think...it's just a small bearing.

anyone have any ideas what my problem actually is then? I guess it would probably be pretty hard to diagnosis considering what caused these problems was us taking the tranny apart and putting it back together...well any input/ideas are welcome. I have until saturday to hear ideas. Saturday it gets torn apart again.

Sup man, I recently rebuilt my own tranny as well. I hate to say it, but it sonuds like you're gonna have to pull it back out and disassemble it again. Did you try to shift the tranny with the linkage before you put it back in the car? When I first reassembled my tranny I couldn't get it to go into 5th gear. I had to pull the housing back apart and pull the 5th gear assembly apart to inspect. I had one synchro ring slightly out of alignment, which I luckily found and reinstalled correctly.

My advice is to pull the tranny and open the case back up and try to shift throught the gears. You should be able to manually shift the forks into all the gears with your hands. If you can't do that then some or all of the synchro sleeve/hub assemblies are installed incorrectly. If you follow your helms manual it will tell you how to install correctly. Again- those synchro assemblies are have to be installed in a specific way (too difficult to explain on this thread, but the helms explains it well.)
Once you think you have everything assembled correctly put the two housings together and torque them down WITHOUT hondabond. bolt the shift linkage on and see if you can shift through all 5 gears and reverse. If you can, then its time to hondabond the case back together and reinstall into your lude.

If you have any specific questions on the tranny rebuild I am more than willing to answer them.

Good luck!

I only have a chilton's manual. Would anyone happen to have a copy of the part of the helms manual that shows in detail how to put everything in the tranny together?

*edit* i just ordered one of those helms manuals on cd off of ebay but i'm taking apart the tranny again on saturday. I wish i woulda ordered this sooner but there's nothing i can do now, i won't get it in time. If anyone has the diagram from the helms of the inside of the tranny that you could show me i would be EXTREMELY grateful.

I'll try to scan in the pages for you if I can. Mine have greasy fingerprints all over them though, hopefully it'll turn out well enough for you to read.

any chance you can get those pictures up in the next couple hours? We're starting on the car right now, if anyone has a diagram of the inside of the tranny i'd really appreciate seeing it. I just need it in the next couple hours

you can download a PDF version of Honda Prelude (92-96) Service Manual(38Mb PDF) from hondahookup dot com. You must be member and logged in to download the manuals so register and download it. I got mine from there too and when I look at TRANSAXLE section which has way too much pictures and infor to give you some good pictures....

You didn't shift the tranny once you had it all back put together?

The only answer you are going to find here is you messed something up on the install. Basically you're best bet is breaking it apart and starting from scratch. You could have messed up numerous things.

We tore the tranny apart again yesterday and hopefully found the problem without having to even dig into the gears. The brake stopper ring, part number 9 in this diagram, http://www.hondaautomotivepart...SHAFT was not installed right. It was all eaten away and fucked up. This seems to be the cause for all the metal shavings as well. Anyone know if an incorrect installation of the brake stopper ring could be the cause of all my problems?

sounds like one of the main shafts are either bent or locked up somehow..take it apart and get yourself a book and recheck the shafts and bearings, before you reinstall ALWAY check if the trans will shift every gear..if so then your trans will be straight
