You can take it off, but you won't gain anything but noise. It won't increase your hp/tq in the slightest. Plus, it could cause some internal damage on warmer days.

Engine bay heat + already warm air = possibility of overheating your engine.

when your moving its not really hot under there..
air is forced in the engine bay when u move and then pushed out near the wiper area thus keeping the under hood air temps relativly cool

One day I'll post pics of my modified oem intake box that draws cool air. Cost $5 to make at the local autoparts store.

Did it help performance? I dunno...but does anything when it really comes down to it.

I've seen threads where people have cut out the silencer on the RSX airbox. I haven't cut mine, so I don't know what the effect is, if any.

I would be concerned that with the increased noise comes turbulance that may hinder air flow. I suppose only a repeatable result on a dyno would prove anything.

its not going to make the car faster, that much I can assure you but I doubt it will cause any engine damage. Hondas in general and the d17 in particular are way over cooled for trafic reasons. The added intake charge heat isnt nearly enough to cause problems in normal driving. If it takes 10 min of track driving to overheat the oil and the coolant temp never gets too high then a missing silencer isnt going to hurt anything except power.
