Default There is a god that performs miracles!!!!

OMG, I bet some might find this hard to believe cuz i still do. But, today I was taking the covers off to replace my timing belt so i can put my engine back in and finish my turbo install. I pulled off the crank pulley and the cover. Here is where it starts to get interesting I had no bolts or nuts holding my tensioners on. They would just freely move. I have a picture attached. I bought the car 60k miles ago, 2 yrs and I noticed someone did head work b/c the head was painted black with some of the block too. I didnt think anything about it. Now, I pull off and see that there was no tensioning on the belt so to speak of. How did I drive (a lot of hard driving too) for 2 yrs 60k miles and it not break, sling, or jump time. I know my timing was so to speak of off here and there b/c of it but my car ran great....I am astonished that it still ran...What do you guys think?

Looks like he just swapped from an Auto to Manual tenisoner, so that's actually a good thing expecially if you plan on boosting.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't you remove the tensioner bolt when you took the covers off???? I believe it has to come off to remove the covers, and it is mounted on the outside so you can adjust tension without removing them.

I agree, he prolly removed it and didn't even realize it. Those threads are too shiny to have been exposed to the lovely mother nature for 2 years.

Yeah you have to remove it to take the timing covers off. It's that little black acorn nut...12 or 14mm and when it's loosened the tension is lost.

Yup 14mm. But you don't "have" to remove it - at least not on H22's. There is a rubber seal that sits on it you can pull off and the cover will slide over it. I have done it both ways.
