ran out of gas and will not start

ran out of gas and will not start
I had a little bit of gas in the del sol and it ran out and now it does not start. people are telling me that is that air got in the fuel pump is that true or could it be some thing else .... please help.....

Have someone hit the gas tank with a rubber malette while the fuel pump turns on.
