Default Please Critique my welds...

I rolled some pretty good beads today ALL of the pictures were done with a 450 AMP Miller welder....

One of the first without messing much with the settings, Running the wire a little to fast, good penetration, no contamination...

After messing with the settings and doing another half N hour of welding I turned out a REALLY good product for myself... ((( I think)))

good penetration and pretty decent job of running the bead.

another shot of that last bead

Here's some Great work from a guy Chris 22 years old... talking about a roll of dimes...

http://img175.imageshack.us/im...1.jpg

this was done on a 9 inch pipe... 2 passes were made on this pipe.

hopefully someday I'll be able to turn out a product like this...

That pipe will be pressure tested to 2,000 psi...

And all was done with a Mig welder.

i'm new to welding too... I'm curious about splatter... is that cause by the lack of gas or improper gas??? I'm using a flux core right now (since I ran out of gas)... and it gets mess with splatter.

running mig mix will get you spatter, only way to really get rid of it is to run straight argon but that's too damned expensive for mig, just take your bastard file and scrape it off when you're done.
you shouldn't get too big of ***** otherwise your heat/wire speed is set wrong.

Looks almost like TIG. Can't wait til I get gas for my HH 140 . Right now I am just sticking to flux core; its not so bad, looks the same as if using CO2 for shielding.

Looks pretty good. Some of the welds look a bit convex, could be a travel problem, or your wire might a tad high. But pretty damn decent.

Spatter is usually a stickout problem. It is caused from the electrode not making a great current. You may be going in and out? I dunno tho. In a (production atmosphere) that might not pass just cuz spatter sucks to clean up. But thats what pulse is for. Looks to be only on the one weld tho, so you may have it figured out.

I made my first attempt today during my lunch hour at trying to roll a couple dimes... Its helping me tons to have someone over my shoulder telling me if Im overcutting or undercutting a weld, this weld isnt consistent at all but I'm atleast getting the point.
after about 50 minutes of practice I got this...

thanks
Andrew

Today during lunch I tried welding upright and man did that suck... it was by far one of the hardre things I've done... that and practiced some more on rolling some dimes... I think I'm doing pretty decent.

Yeah I work in a shop... 20 years old, and having a very nice man teaching me the trade... our welders are millers from the 70's and that was on .35 wire... I'll post pics of it with the thinner wire...

I like the way these older welders weld much better...

nothing like 450 amps at your finger tips... btw the welding gun I'm shooting those out of is like 49587349 feet long... its huge.

its not the gun, its the person behind it

the last shots look like you're progressing nicely, however the size of the bead compared to the thickness of the material is way too big. otherwise it looks good.

the shots before that are way undercut, too much wire speed not enough heat.

im somewhat new to welding but ive been doing it a lot as to i machine and weld as my job in the military but as i see it, your 3 picture that you can actually see your weld id say you went a little fast. you can tell by how you see the V like bead and its not O like a circle. try just slowing up that just a little and not to say your friends doesnt look that good but he looks to mig weld like i do, its pulse welding...almost like spot welding it over and over as you go. looks nice though none the less but i think thats the easiest to make mig look good. goodluck
