Default I picked up a Tig welder, I think im off to a good start

well, I ended up getting a tig welder, Im in collage and only 20 years old..so I couldnt afford any baller status welder, but got a lincoln 175 tig/stick welder. Well, I've been plaing around with it the last week or so, I've never tigged before this. But I started with aluminum instead of steel. But to get to the point, let me know what you guys think of my progress so far. Give me some pointers or tips if you guys see any.

used.
1/16 4043 filler rod
1/16 pure tungsten
.040 and.060 aluminum

Here's 2 three inch of .040 butt welded together

Some box thing, 2 inches wide by 8 3/4 long. .060 aluminum used

hexagon thing .060 aluminum, 6 inches long and 2 inch sides.

whatcha think???????

Very nice so far. The first one looks too hot, but you are making lots of progress.

On aluminum I like to use 3/32" thoriated(red) tungsten. Give it a try.

how much/where did you get your Lincoln from? I'm interested in getting into Tig welding too but on a tight budget for now.

The heat looks a bit uncontrolled and soupy almost. But if thats some of your first welds, then your off to a way better start than a lot of people that i have seen. . Looks like you have great mechanical skills, and soon you will find yourself getting better and better, and learning how to control your heat.

so I tried 2% thoriated, I couldnt really tell a difference. But should I grind the end to a ball, since it doesnt really ball up on the end like the Pure tungsten would. Or do I keep it to a point, like if I were welding steel??

as stated you need to work on your heat control - pic 2 shows the dark gray scabbing you get when when you completely burn through. Try to get full penetration with a shiny backside or light frosting (looks just like the stuff to the left and right of your beads).

tips - don't even try to get a stacked dime effect, instead just focus entirely on heat-control until you get that down. Keep a consistent arc length - longer arc = more heat, just like a spark plug. On non T-joints, red or green works just as well - I just chamfer the edges of the tungsten - it'll ball up by itself and when it does, keep welding with the ball so you get an understanding of it's effect on arc control.

While yor beginning, don't bother regrinding if you accidentally dip the electrode, just keep the arc going til it cleans itself and get keep going (I realized when starting out, you could keep going even if you dipped several times - I tell you this to just save time while practicing and to get an understanding of how Al welds)

after you master lap welds practice on butts and tees

and remember "practice, practice, practice" is not a slogan for lazy teachers, you really need DOZENS of hours to really get down Al just right

good luck

basically.

take a look at how big a piece of aluminum you're welding and think about how long its going to take to raise the temperature...so as the temperature increased you dont need to put as much heat into the piece as before. back off on the pedal as you feel/experience the piece heating up.

The beads are too far apart, there suppose to look more like this...

Closer together insures stregnth and reduces chances of pitting

Other than that Very Nice welds for Just starting out tig welding
